Then the Year 321 AH Began
وَفِيهَا أَمَرَ الْقَاهِرُ بِتَحْرِيمِ الْخَمْرِ وَالْغِنَاءِ وَسَائِرِ الْأَنْبِذَةِ، وَنَفَى بَعْضَ مَنْ كَانَ يُعْرَفُ بِذَلِكَ إِلَى الْبَصْرَةِ وَالْكُوفَةِ، وَأَمَّا الْجَوَارِي الْمُغَنِّيَاتُ فَأَمَرَ بِبَيْعِهِنَّ عَلَى أَنَّهُنَّ سَوَذِاجُ لَا يَعْرِفْنَ الْغِنَاءَ، ثُمَّ وَضَعَ مَنْ يَشْتَرِي لَهُ كُلَّ حَاذِقَةٍ فِي صَنْعَةِ الْغِنَاءِ، فَاشْتَرَى مِنْهُنَّ مَا أَرَادَ بِأَرْخَصِ الْأَثْمَانِ، وَكَانَ الْقَاهِرُ مُشْتَهِرًا بِالْغِنَاءِ وَالسَّمَاعِ، فَجَعَلَ ذَلِكَ طَرِيقًا إِلَى تَحْصِيلِ غَرَضِهِ رَخِيصًا، نَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأَخْلَاقِ الَّتِي لَا يَرْضَاهَا عَامَّةُ النَّاسِ.
Translation
✧ In this year al-Qāhir ordered the prohibition of wine, singing, and all nabīdh drinks, and banished some of those known for that to al-Baṣrah and al-Kūfah. As for the singing slave girls, he ordered them to be sold on the basis that they were sūdhāj who did not know singing. Then he appointed someone to buy for him every girl skilled in the craft of singing, and purchased from among them what he wanted at the cheapest prices. Al-Qāhir was renowned for singing and listening, so he made that a means to obtain his desire cheaply. We seek refuge with Allah from these morals that not even the common people would accept.
