✧ Mention of the alienation of Muʾnis and his associates from al-Qāhir In this year, Muʾnis al-Muẓaffar, Bulayq the chamberlain, his son ʿAlī, and the vizier Abū ʿAlī b. Muqlah became alienated from al-Qāhir, and they restricted him and his entourage. The reason for that was that Muḥammad b. Yāqūt had advanced in al-Qāhir's favor, his rank had risen, and he came to be alone with him and consult him. That weighed heavily on Ibn Muqlah because of an enmity that existed between him and Muḥammad, so he suggested to Muʾnis that Muḥammad was slandering him before al-Qāhir, and that ʿĪsā the physician was acting as intermediary between them in plotting against him. So Muʾnis sent ʿAlī b. Bulayq to bring ʿĪsā the physician. He found him in the presence of al-Qāhir, seized him, and brought him to Muʾnis, who sent him at once to al-Mawṣil. They agreed to do away with Muḥammad b. Yāqūt, who was in the tents. So ʿAlī b. Bulayq rode with his troops to raid him, but found that he had gone into hiding. He plundered his followers, and Muḥammad b. Yāqūt concealed himself. And ʿAlī b. Bulayq appointed Aḥmad b. Zīrak over the caliph's palace and ordered him to restrict al-Qāhir, to search everyone entering or leaving the palace, and to uncover the faces of veiled women. If he found anyone carrying a note, he was to hand it over to Muʾnis. He did that, and went beyond it: even milk was brought to the caliph's palace, and he put his hand into it so that there might be no note in it. Bulayq also transferred those who were imprisoned in al-Qāhir's palace to his own house, such as the mother of al-Muqtadir and others, and he cut off the stipends of his retinue. As for the mother of al-Muqtadir, her illness had grown severe because of the heavy beating al-Qāhir had given her. ʿAlī b. Bulayq treated her honorably and left her with his own mother. She died in Jumādā al-Ākhirah, honored and comfortable, and was buried in her tomb in al-Ruṣāfah. ʿAlī b. Bulayq restricted al-Qāhir, and al-Qāhir realized that reproach would not help and that this was by the counsel of Muʾnis and Ibn Muqlah. So he set about employing stratagem and plotting against all of them. He had already learned of the ill will in the hearts of Ṭarīf al-Subkarī and Bushrā, Muʾnis's servant, toward Bulayq and his son ʿAlī, and of their envy of the two over their positions. So he began inciting them against Bulayq and his son. He also knew that Muʾnis and Bulayq relied most heavily on the Sājiyyah, the followers of Yūsuf b. Abī al-Sāj and his pages who had joined them after him. The two had made promises to the Sājiyyah regarding al-Mawṣil but had broken them. So al-Qāhir sent to them, inciting them against Muʾnis and Bulayq, and swore to them that he would fulfill what the two had failed to do for them. Thus the hearts of the Sājiyyah turned. Then he corresponded with Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. al-Qāsim b. ʿUbayd Allāh, who was one of Ibn Muqlah's associates and his counselor. He promised him the vizierate, and so he kept him informed of the news. Ibn Muqlah learned that al-Qāhir had turned against him and that he was striving to plot against him, Muʾnis, Bulayq, his son ʿAlī, and al-Ḥasan b. Hārūn. Ibn Muqlah informed them of that.
