Translation

✧ Mention of the situation of ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. al-Muqtadir and those with him We have already mentioned the flight of ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. al-Muqtadir, Hārūn b. Gharīb, Mufliḥ, Muḥammad b. Yāqūt, and the two sons of Rāʾiq, after the killing of al-Muqtadir, to al-Madāʾin. Then they descended from there to Wāsiṭ and stayed there, and the people feared them. Hārūn b. Gharīb began and wrote to Baghdād seeking amān, offering to pay a muṣādara of three hundred thousand dīnārs on condition that his properties be released to him, that he relinquish the properties he had leased, and that he pay from his properties the old rights of the bayt al-māl. Al-Qāhir and Muʾnis responded to him with that, and they wrote for him a letter of amān, and he was invested with the districts of Māh al-Kūfa, Māsabadhān, and Mihrajān Qadhaq, and he traveled to Baghdād. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. al-Muqtadir departed from Wāsiṭ with those who remained with him, and they went to al-Sūs and Sūq al-Ahwāz. They collected the revenue, expelled the tax collectors, and stayed in al-Ahwāz. Muʾnis equipped a dense army against them and placed Bulayq in command of them. The one who incited them to send the army was Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī, for he had come out of prison and warned them of the consequences of neglecting ʿAbd al-Wāḥid and those with him. He offered immediate assistance of fifty thousand dīnārs on condition that he be given charge of al-Ahwāz, and when he was established in those lands he would pay the remainder of the money promptly. Muʾnis ordered the equipping and spent that money, and the army marched, with Abū ʿAbd Allāh among them. Muḥammad b. Yāqūt had seized sole control over the funds and command, and the hearts of the commanders and troops with him were alienated by that. When the army drew near to Wāsiṭ, the commanders with him revealed what was in their hearts and deserted him. When Bulayq reached al-Sūs, ʿAbd al-Wāḥid and Muḥammad b. Yāqūt left al-Ahwāz and went to Tustar. Al-Qarārīṭī, who was with the army, did to the people of al-Ahwāz what no one had done: he plundered their wealth and subjected them all to muṣādara, and not one of them was spared. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid and Ibn Yāqūt encamped at Tustar, and the commanders with them deserted to Bulayq under amān. Mufliḥ and the eunuch Surūr remained with ʿAbd al-Wāḥid, and they said to Muḥammad b. Yāqūt: "You are protected by this city, your wealth, and your men, but we have neither wealth nor men with us. Our staying with you harms you and does not benefit you. We have resolved to seek amān for ourselves and for ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. al-Muqtadir." He gave them permission for that, so they wrote to Bulayq and he granted them amān, and they crossed over to him. Muḥammad b. Yāqūt remained alone, and his spirit weakened, and he was bewildered. He and Bulayq exchanged messages, and it was settled between them that he would go out to Bulayq on condition that he grant him amān and guarantee him the amān of Muʾnis and al-Qāhir. He did that and swore to him, and Muḥammad b. Yāqūt went out with him to Baghdād. Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī took control of the lands, oppressed their people, seized the wealth of the merchants, and did to the people of the lands what the Franks would not do. No one restrained him from what he wanted, and he had no religious scruple to deter him from that. His brothers returned to their districts. When ʿAbd al-Wāḥid and Muḥammad b. Yāqūt returned, al-Qāhir fulfilled his promise to them and released ʿAbd al-Wāḥid's properties to him, and he remitted for his mother the muṣādara with which he had subjected her.
