✧ The Arrest of Muʾnis and Bulayq In this year, on the first of Shaʿbān, al-Qāhir bi-llāh arrested Bulayq and his son, and Muʾnis al-Muẓaffar. The reason for that was that when Ibn Muqlah mentioned to Muʾnis and Bulayq what al-Qāhir was plotting to eradicate them, they feared him, and fear drove them to strive earnestly to depose him. Their opinion agreed on appointing Abū Aḥmad b. al-Muktafī as successor, and they secretly pledged allegiance to him. Bulayq and his son ʿAlī, the vizier Abū ʿAlī b. Muqlah, and al-Ḥasan b. Hārūn swore allegiance to him. Then they revealed the matter to Muʾnis, who said to them: "I have no doubt about the evil of al-Qāhir and his wickedness. I was averse to his caliphate, and I pointed to Ibn al-Muqtadir, but you opposed me. Now you have gone to great lengths in belittling him, and he has only endured humiliation out of the wickedness of his intention, to plot against you. So do not be hasty in a matter until you feel reassured about him and he opens up to you. Then investigate to find out who among the commanders and the Sājiyyah and the Ḥujariyyah is in league with him, and then act accordingly." ʿAlī b. Bulayq and al-Ḥasan b. Hārūn said: "There is no need for this lengthy procedure, for the chamberlains are ours, and the palace is in our hands. We do not need anyone's help to seize him, for he is like a bird in a cage." They resolved to strike him quickly, but it happened that Bulayq fell from his mount and was injured, so he kept to his house. His son ʿAlī and Abū ʿAlī b. Muqlah agreed and made the deposition of al-Qāhir seem easy to Muʾnis, minimizing the matter. He gave them permission. Their opinion then agreed on putting out that Abū Ṭāhir the Qarmaṭī had arrived in Kufa with a great host, and that ʿAlī b. Bulayq was marching against him with the army to prevent him from reaching Baghdad. When he entered to see al-Qāhir to bid him farewell and receive his orders about what to do, he would seize him. When they had agreed on that, Ibn Muqlah sat with people around him and said to Abū Bakr b. Qurābah: "Do you know that the Qarmaṭī has entered Kufa with six thousand fully armed fighters?" He said: "No." Ibn Muqlah said: "Letters from the governors have reached us about that." Ibn Qurābah said: "That is a lie and impossible, for in our neighborhood there is a man from Kufa, and today a letter arrived for him by carrier pigeon dated today, telling him of his safety." Ibn Muqlah said to him: "Glory be to God, are you more knowledgeable than us about news?" Ibn Qurābah fell silent. Ibn Muqlah wrote to the caliph informing him of that, saying: "I have equipped an army with ʿAlī b. Bulayq to march this day, and in the afternoon he will come to the service so that our master may command him as he sees fit." Al-Qāhir wrote back thanking him and granting permission for Ibn Bulayq to attend. The note from al-Qāhir arrived while Ibn Muqlah was asleep, so they left it and did not deliver it to him. When he awoke, he went and wrote another note to the same effect. Al-Qāhir found this suspicious, since he had already written his reply, and feared there might be a plot. While he was in this state, a note arrived from Ṭarīf al-Subkarī saying that he had a piece of confidential advice and had come disguised as a woman to convey it. Al-Qāhir met with him, and he told him everything they had alleged against him and the plot they had arranged for Ibn Bulayq to seize him when he met with him, and that they had pledged allegiance to Abū Aḥmad b. al-Muktafī. When al-Qāhir heard that, he took precautions and sent for the Sājiyyah, summoning them separately and hiding them in the corridors, passageways, and porticoes. ʿAlī b. Bulayq came after the afternoon prayer, somewhat intoxicated, with only a few of his pages lightly armed, in a boat. He had ordered a group of his army to ride to the gates of the caliph's palace. He disembarked from the boat and asked permission to enter, but al-Qāhir did not grant it. He became angry and behaved rudely, saying: "I must see him whether he likes it or not." Al-Qāhir had brought the Sājiyyah as we mentioned, and they were with him in the palace. He ordered them to repel him. They went out to him, reviled him and his father, drew their weapons, and all advanced on him. His companions fled from him, and he threw himself into the boat and crossed to the west bank, hiding immediately. The news reached Ibn Muqlah, who went into hiding, and al-Ḥasan b. Hārūn also hid. When Ṭarīf heard the news, he mounted with his followers, fully armed, and they came to the caliph's palace, and al-Qāhir stood firm. The matter then became grave for Ibn Bulayq and his group. Bulayq denied what had happened to his son and cursed the Sājiyyah, saying: "I must go to the caliph's palace. If the Sājiyyah did this without prior instruction, I will confront them with what they deserve, and if it was by instruction, I will ask him about the reason." He went to the caliph's palace with all the commanders who were at Muʾnis's house, but al-Qāhir did not admit him. He ordered his arrest and imprisonment, and also ordered the arrest of Aḥmad b. Zīrak, the chief of police. The entire army gathered at the palace, and al-Qāhir sent to calm them, promising them increases and saying that he would bring these men to account for their sins and then release them and treat them well. So they went back. Al-Qāhir sent word to Muʾnis asking him to come to him so that he could present what had been reported against them and let him do as he saw fit. He said: "He is like a father to me, and I do not wish to do anything except based on his opinion." Muʾnis excused himself from moving, and his companions advised him not to go to him. The next day, al-Qāhir summoned Ṭarīf al-Subkarī and handed him his signet ring, saying: "I have delegated to my son ʿAbd al-Ṣamad what al-Muqtadir had delegated to his son Muḥammad, and I have appointed you as his deputy, head of the army, and commander of commanders, and treasurer of the treasuries, as that was for Muʾnis. You must go to him and bring him to the palace, for as long as he remains in his house, those who wish evil will gather around him, and I am not safe from trouble arising. He will be comfortable here, and with him will be some of his companions to serve him as usual." He went to Muʾnis's house, where his companions were in arms. Muʾnis was overcome by old age and weakness. His companions asked Ṭarīf about the situation, and he mentioned the bad conduct of Bulayq and his son, and they all cursed them. He told them of the pledge of safety and assurances he had obtained for them, and they fell silent. He entered to see Muʾnis and advised him to go to al-Qāhir, urging him: "If you delay, he will become greedy. Even if he saw you sleeping, he would not dare wake you." He was in agreement with Muʾnis and his companions for what we shall mention. So Muʾnis went to him, and when he entered the palace, al-Qāhir arrested him and imprisoned him without seeing him. Ṭarīf said: "When I informed al-Qāhir that Muʾnis had come, he trembled and his condition changed, and he slid from the edge of his bed. I was afraid to speak to him about it, and I realized I had made a mistake and regretted it. I became certain that I would soon join those people. I remembered Muʾnis's words about him, that he knew him for rashness, evil, boldness, and ignorance. And God's command is a decree determined." The vizierate of Ibn Muqlah this time lasted nine months and three days. Al-Qāhir appointed Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. al-Qāsim b. ʿUbayd Allāh as vizier at the beginning of Shaʿbān, and invested him with robes. Al-Qāhir sent and sealed the houses of Muʾnis, Bulayq and his son ʿAlī, Ibn Muqlah, Aḥmad b. Zīrak, and al-Ḥasan b. Hārūn. He confiscated their mounts and placed agents over their women. He sent for ʿĪsā the physician to come from Mosul, and ordered the contents of Ibn Muqlah's house to be removed and burned. It was looted and burned, and the houses of those connected with them were also looted. Muḥammad b. Yāqūt appeared and took charge of the chamberlains. Then he sensed the aversion of Ṭarīf al-Subkarī and the Sājiyyah toward him, so he went into hiding and fled to his father in Fars. Al-Qāhir wrote to him blaming him for his hasty flight and appointed him over the districts of al-Ahwāz. The reason for the inclination of Ṭarīf al-Subkarī, the Sājiyyah, and the Ḥujariyyah toward al-Qāhir and their secret agreement against Muʾnis and Bulayq and his son was as we shall mention: Ṭarīf had been the most senior and highest-ranking commander of Muʾnis, and Bulayq and his son were among those who kissed his hand and served him. When al-Qāhir bi-llāh became caliph, Bulayq and his son advanced and wielded power in the state as we mentioned. Ibn Bulayq neglected Ṭarīf, turned against him, and deprived him of most of his offices. When his idleness had gone on long, Bulayq felt embarrassed before him and feared his resentment, so he resolved to appoint him over Egypt to fulfill his due and send him away, along with the leading men among his associates, to keep them safe. He said this to the vizier Abū ʿAlī b. Muqlah, who saw it as right. Bulayq apologized to Ṭarīf for his idleness and informed him of the Egypt appointment. He thanked him and also thanked the vizier, but ʿAlī b. Bulayq prevented the completion of that and took over the appointment himself, sending someone to act in his place there. Thus Ṭarīf became an enemy who lay in wait for calamities to befall them. As for the Sājiyyah, they were the strength and support of Muʾnis. They had marched with him to Mosul and returned with him to fight al-Muqtadir. Muʾnis al-Muẓaffar had promised them increases, but when al-Muqtadir was killed, they saw that he did not fulfill his promise; Ibn Bulayq diverted him from it. Ibn Bulayq also cast them aside and turned away from them. Among them was a black eunuch named Ṣandal, one of their leading men, and there was a eunuch named Muʾtaman whom he had sold. Muʾtaman had become attached to al-Qāhir before his caliphate, and when he became caliph, he advanced him and made him his messenger. When al-Qāhir was afflicted by Ibn Bulayq and his bad treatment, he was like a drowning man clutching at anything. He was skilled in cunning and deceit, so he ordered Muʾtaman to go to Ṣandal the Sājī, whom he had sold, and complain about al-Qāhir. If he saw that Ṣandal rejected what he said, he should inform him of al-Qāhir's situation and what he suffered from Ibn Bulayq and his son, but if he saw the opposite, he should remain silent. He went to him and did as ordered. When he complained, Ṣandal said to him: "What is the caliph in a position to give you and be generous to you? If God delivers him from this troublemaker, I and others will need you. I vow a fast and alms that if the caliph gains control of his affairs and finds relief, and relieves us from this cursed man." Muʾtaman reported the conversation to al-Qāhir, who sent through him a fine gift of perfume and other things to Ṣandal's wife, saying to him: "Take it to her while her husband is away, and tell her the caliph distributed something among us, and this is from my share which I have given you as a gift." He did that, and she accepted it. The next day he returned to her and said: "What did Ṣandal say when he saw my openness with you?" She said: "He and so-and-so met"—she named six of their leading men—"and they saw what you gave us, and they used some of it and prayed for the caliph." While he was with her, her husband came in, and he thanked Muʾtaman and asked him about the caliph's circumstances. He praised him and described his generosity, good character, and firmness in religion. Ṣandal said: "Ibn Bulayq accuses him of lacking religion and throws ugly things at him." Muʾtaman swore that that was false and that all of it was a lie. Then al-Qāhir ordered Muʾtaman to go to Ṣandal's wife and summon her to the housekeeper of al-Qāhir. She came in disguise as a midwife to whom those in al-Qāhir's household could feel at ease, since they were in the palace of Ibn Ṭāhir, and she had come because some of the palace's residents needed her. She did that, entered the palace, and spent the night there. Al-Qāhir gave her a message for her husband and his comrades, and wrote them a note in his own hand promising them increases in land grants and stipends. He gave her money for herself. She returned to her husband and told him everything that had happened. The news reached Ibn Bulayq that a woman from the palace of Ibn Ṭāhir had entered the caliph's palace, and for this reason Ibn Bulayq forbade any woman from entering unless she was seen and identified. The Sājiyyah had a prominent commander named Sīmā, and all of them deferred to his opinion. Ṣandal and those with him agreed to inform Sīmā of this, since they could not do without him. They told him of al-Qāhir's message to them. He said: "This is right, and the outcome will be good, but some of these people must be brought into the matter"—meaning the followers of Bulayq and Muʾnis—"and let it be one of their leading men." They settled on Ṭarīf al-Subkarī, saying: "He too is disaffected." They came to him and complained of their situation, saying: "If the master"—meaning Muʾnis—"were in control of his affairs, we would attain what we want, but he has become incapable and weak, and Ibn Bulayq has monopolized affairs." They found in him aversion toward them many times greater than they had sought. Then they informed him of their situation, and he agreed to go along with them. He made them swear that no harm or injury would befall Muʾnis, Bulayq, or his son in their persons, bodies, or properties, and that Bulayq and his son would merely be confined to their homes, while Muʾnis would remain in his rank unchanged. They swore to that, and he swore to them on agreement. He asked for al-Qāhir's handwritten promise, so they sent to al-Qāhir with what had happened. He wrote to them what they wanted, adding that he would lead the people in prayer, deliver the Friday sermons, lead them on the pilgrimage, go on campaigns with them, sit for the people, and redress their grievances, along with other good conduct. Then Ṭarīf met with a group of the leaders of the Ḥujariyyah. Ibn Bulayq had removed them from the palace and stationed his own followers there, so they were angry with him. When Ṭarīf informed them of the matter, they agreed to it. Something of this talk leaked to Ibn Muqlah and Ibn Bulayq, but they did not know its details. They agreed to arrest a group of the commanders of the Sājiyyah and the Ḥujariyyah, but they did not dare to move against them for fear of civil strife. Al-Qāhir had displayed an illness of boils and other things, so he secluded himself from the people out of fear of them, and no one saw him except the elite of his servants at rare times. Thus it became difficult for Ibn Muqlah and Ibn Bulayq to meet with him to achieve what they wanted from him, so they fabricated what we have mentioned of the reports of the Qarāmiṭah so that he would appear to them and they could do to him what they wanted. When al-Qāhir seized Muʾnis and his group, he appointed Salāmah al-Ṭūlūnī over the chamberlains and Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad b. Khāqān over the police, and he appointed Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. al-Qāsim b. ʿUbayd Allāh as vizier. He ordered a proclamation against those in hiding, the confiscation of the wealth of anyone who concealed them, and the demolition of his house. He strove in seeking Aḥmad b. al-Muktafī, and he captured him, and he built a wall upon him while he was alive, so he died. He captured ʿAlī b. Bulayq and killed him.
