Translation
✧ The war between Hārūn and the army of Mardāwīj We have previously mentioned the killing of Asfār and the kingship of Mardāwīj, and that he took possession of the land of al-Jabal, al-Rayy, and others. The Daylamites came to him from every direction because of his generosity and kindness to his troops, so his armies became great, his forces numerous, and the land tax upon him increased. What was in his hand did not suffice him, so he distributed his deputies in the regions neighboring him. Among those he sent to Hamadhān was a son of his sister with a large army. Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. Khalaf was there with the caliph's army, and they fought many battles. The people of Hamadhān aided the caliph's army, so they prevailed over the Daylamites, and Mardāwīj's nephew was killed. Mardāwīj then marched from al-Rayy to Hamadhān. When the caliph's companions heard of his march, they fled from Hamadhān. He came to Hamadhān and encamped at the Lion Gate. Its people fortified themselves against him, and he fought them, prevailed over them, killed many of them, burned, and took captives. Then he lifted the sword from them and granted safety to the rest. Al-Muqtadir sent Hārūn b. Gharīb al-Khāl with many armies to fight him. They met in the districts of Hamadhān and fought a fierce battle. Hārūn and the caliph's army were defeated, and Mardāwīj took possession of all the lands of al-Jabal and what lies beyond Hamadhān. He sent a great commander of his companions known as Ibn ʿAllān al-Qazwīnī to al-Dīnawar, and he conquered it by the sword, killing many of its people. His armies reached the districts of Ḥulwān, where they took booty, plundered, killed, and captured children and women, and then returned to him.
