✧ The Emergence of Ṣāliḥ and al-Agharr In the year three hundred and eighteen, in Jumādā al-Ūlā, a Khārijī from Bajīlah, from the people of al-Bawāzīj, named Ṣāliḥ b. Maḥmūd, rose up and crossed over to the desert. A group from Banū Mālik joined him, and he marched to Sinjār and took money from its people. He encountered caravans and took a tithe from them. He delivered a sermon in Sinjār, reminding them of the command of God and warning them, and he prolonged this. Then he said: "We befriend the two Shaykhs, and we disavow the two wicked ones, and we do not hold the wiping over the leather socks." Then he departed from there to al-Shajājiyyah, in the land of al-Mawṣil, and demanded the tithe from its people and the people of the districts of al-Faraj. He stayed for some days, then went down to al-Ḥadīthah, below al-Mawṣil, and demanded from the Muslims the zakāh of their wealth, and from the Christians the jizyah of their heads. Fighting broke out between them, and a group of his companions was killed, and they prevented him from entering it. He burned six boats for them and crossed over to the western side. The people of al-Ḥadīthah captured a son of Ṣāliḥ named Muḥammad, and Naṣr b. Ḥamdān b. Ḥamdūn, who was the governor of al-Mawṣil, took him and brought him into the city. Then Ṣāliḥ marched to al-Sinn, and its people made peace with him for money he took from them. He departed to al-Bawāzīj, and from there he marched to Tall Khūsā, a village in the districts of al-Mawṣil near the Upper Zāb. He wrote to the people of al-Mawṣil concerning his son, threatening them if they did not return him to him. Then he departed to al-Salāmiyyah. Naṣr b. Ḥamdān marched against him on the fifth of Shaʿbān of this year, but Ṣāliḥ left al-Salāmiyyah for al-Bawāzīj. Naṣr pursued him and caught up with him there. He fought him a fierce battle in which about a hundred men of Ṣāliḥ's men were killed, and a group of Naṣr's companions were killed. Ṣāliḥ was taken prisoner along with two of his sons. They were brought into al-Mawṣil, and then they were transported to Baghdādh, where they were paraded publicly. In this year, in Shaʿbān, a Khārijī named al-Agharr b. Maṭarah al-Thaʿlabī rose up in the land of al-Mawṣil. He claimed to be from the progeny of ʿAttāb b. Kulthūm al-Thaʿlabī, the brother of ʿAmr b. Kulthūm the poet. His uprising was in the environs of Raʾs al-ʿAyn. He headed for Kafartūthā, and about two thousand men had gathered with him. He entered it, plundered it, and killed people there. Then he marched to Naṣībīn and camped near it. Its governor came out against him with a gathering of soldiers and common people, and they fought him. The Khārijī killed a hundred of them and captured a thousand men, then ransomed them back to themselves. The people of Naṣībīn made peace with him for four hundred thousand dirhams. His news reached Nāṣir al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān, who was the governor of Diyār Rabīʿah, and he sent an army against him. They fought him, defeated him, and captured him. Nāṣir al-Dawlah sent him to Baghdādh.
