Translation
✧ The arrest of the sons of al-Barīdī The sons of al-Barīdī — namely Abū ʿAbd Allāh, Abū Yūsuf, and Abū al-Ḥusayn — had undertaken the tax-farming of al-Ahwāz, as mentioned earlier. When the vizier Ibn Muqlah was dismissed, al-Muqtadir wrote in his own hand to Aḥmad b. Naṣr al-Qushūrī, the chamberlain, ordering him to arrest them. He did so, and detained them in his own house. One day he heard a great clamour and terrifying voices, and asked, “What is the news?” He was told: “The vizier has written ordering the release of the Banū al-Barīdī, and Abū ʿAbd Allāh has sent him a forged letter in which he orders their release and their restoration to their offices.” Aḥmad said to them: “This is the caliph’s letter in his own hand, in which he says: Do not release them until another letter in my hand comes to you.” Then it became evident that the letter was forged. Then al-Muqtadir sent for them and had them brought to Baghdādh, and they were fined four hundred thousand dinars — although he did not expect to obtain that sum from them. He had only demanded this amount so that they would agree to part of it; but they agreed to the whole of it, in order to be released and return to their office.
