the accounts of past peoples from the Israelites and others

Translation

✧ Al-Bukhārī said with his chain of transmission from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī from the Prophet ﷺ that he said: There was among the Children of Israel a man who killed ninety-nine people, then he went out asking. He came to a monk and asked him: Is there any repentance? He said: No. So he killed him. He continued asking, and a man said to him: Go to the village of such-and-such. Death overtook him, and he inclined his chest toward it. The angels of mercy and the angels of punishment disputed over him. Allah inspired this village to draw near, and Allah inspired this village to move away, and He said: Measure the distance between the two. He was found to be closer to this one by a span, so he was forgiven. Thus he narrated it here in abridged form. Muslim narrated it from Bundār from him, and from the hadith of Shuʿbah from another route from Qatādah from him in extended form.
