the accounts of past peoples from the Israelites and others

Translation

✧ Al-Bukhārī said with his chain of transmission, on the authority of Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: A man bought from another man a piece of land of his. The man who bought the land found in his land a jar containing gold. The one who bought the land said to him: Take your gold from me; I only bought the land from you, and I did not buy the gold from you. The owner of the land said: I sold you the land and whatever was in it. They brought their dispute before a man. The one to whom they referred the dispute said: Do either of you have children? One of them said: I have a boy. The other said: I have a girl. He said: Marry the boy to the girl, and spend on the two of them from it, and give charity. This is how al-Bukhārī narrated this hadith in the accounts of the Children of Israel, and Muslim transmitted it from Muḥammad b. Rāfiʿ, from ʿAbd al-Razzāq, with the same chain. It has been related that this story occurred in the time of Dhū al-Qarnayn, and that was before the Children of Israel by long ages, so Allah knows best. From al-Ḥasan: Dhū al-Qarnayn used to personally inspect the affairs of his kings and his governors. He would not become aware of any betrayal among them without disapproving of it, and he would not accept that until he himself had looked into it. He said: While he was traveling in disguise in one of the cities, he sat with one of their judges for days, and no one came to him with a dispute. When that went on too long for Dhū al-Qarnayn, and he had not learned anything about that judge's conduct, he was about to leave when two men came to him with a dispute. One of them made a claim and said: O judge, I bought a house from this man, I built it up, and I found a treasure in it. I invited him to take it, but he refused. The judge said to him: What do you say? He said: I did not bury it, and I did not know about it, so it is not mine, and I will not take it from him. The claimant said: O judge, order someone to take it and put it wherever you wish. The judge said: You flee from evil and push me into it; you have not been fair to me, and I do not think this is in accordance with the king's judgment. Then the judge said: Do you two have a matter more just than what you have called me to? They said: Yes. He said to the claimant: Do you have a son? He said: Yes. And he said to the other: Do you have a daughter? He said: Yes. He said: Go and marry your daughter to this man's son, and equip them from this wealth, and give the remainder of what is left to them to live on. You will both have dealt with its good and its evil. Dhū al-Qarnayn was amazed when he heard that, then he said to the judge: I did not think that there was anyone on earth who would do such a thing, or a judge who would judge in such a manner! The judge said, not knowing him: Does anyone do other than this? Dhū al-Qarnayn said: Yes. The judge said: Then do they receive rain in their lands? Dhū al-Qarnayn marveled at that and said: By such as this the heavens and the earth were established.
