Translation
✧ The kingship of Mardāwīj over Ṭabaristān We have mentioned the agreement of Mākān b. Kālī with Mardāwīj and his assistance to him in expeditions. When Mardāwīj's rule became established, his affairs grew strong, and his wealth and armies increased, he coveted Jurjān and Ṭabaristān, which were with Mākān b. Kālī. He gathered his armies and marched to Ṭabaristān. Mākān stood firm against him, but Mardāwīj prevailed over him and took possession of Ṭabaristān. He appointed there Balqāsim b. Bānijīn, who was the isfahsālār of his army, a resolute and brave man of sound judgment. Then Mardāwīj marched toward Jurjān. There, on behalf of Mākān, were Shīrzīl b. Salār and Abū ʿAlī b. Turkī. They fled from Mardāwīj, and Mardāwīj took possession of it. He appointed there Surkhāb b. Bāwis, the maternal uncle of the son of Balqāsim b. Bānijīn, as deputy for Balqāsim. Thus Balqāsim combined Jurjān and Ṭabaristān, and Mardāwīj returned to Iṣbahān victorious and laden with spoils. Mākān went to al-Daylam and sought the aid of Abū al-Faḍl al-Thāʾir, who was there. He honored him and marched with him to Ṭabaristān. Balqāsim met them, and they fought. Mākān and al-Thāʾir were defeated. As for al-Thāʾir, he made for al-Daylam, and as for Mākān, he went to Naysābūr and entered into obedience to al-Saʿīd Naṣr, seeking his aid. He reinforced him with most of his army and went to great lengths to strengthen him. Mākān and Abū ʿAlī joined him, and they fought a fierce battle. Abū ʿAlī and Mākān were defeated and returned to Naysābūr. Then Mākān b. Kālī returned to al-Dāmaghān to take possession of it, but Balqāsim marched against him and drove him away from it, so he returned to Khurāsān.
