Translation
✧ The war between Nāzūk and Hārūn b. Gharīb In the year three hundred and sixteen, discord occurred between Nāzūk, the chief of police, and Hārūn b. Gharīb. The reason for that was that the grooms of Hārūn b. Gharīb's mounts and the grooms of Nāzūk became jealous over a beardless boy, and they struck one another with sticks. Nāzūk imprisoned Hārūn's grooms after beating them. Hārūn's companions went to the police prison, attacked Nāzūk's deputy there, and seized their companions from prison. Nāzūk rode out and complained to al-Muqtadir, who said: "You are both dear to me, and I will not intervene between you." So he returned and gathered his men, and Hārūn gathered his men, and Nāzūk's companions advanced toward Hārūn's residence. He locked his gate, but some of his companions remained outside the residence, so Nāzūk's companions killed and wounded some of them. Hārūn opened the gate, and his companions came out and put weapons to Nāzūk's companions, killing and wounding some of them, and the battle became entangled between them. Then Nāzūk restrained his companions. The caliph sent to both of them, rebuking them for that, so they desisted and the discord subsided. Nāzūk became alienated, and inferred from that al-Muqtadir's change of heart. Then Hārūn rode to him and made peace with him, and went out with his companions and encamped at the Najmī garden to distance himself from Nāzūk. The people spread many rumors, saying: "Hārūn has become the commander of commanders." That weighed heavily on Muʾnis's companions, so they wrote to him about it while he was at al-Raqqah. He hastened to return to Baghdād and encamped at al-Shammāsiyyah in upper Baghdād, and did not meet al-Muqtadir. Prince Abū al-ʿAbbās b. al-Muqtadir and the vizier Ibn Muqlah went up to him and conveyed al-Muqtadir's greeting and his estrangement toward him. He returned, and each of al-Muqtadir and Muʾnis became wary of the other. Al-Muqtadir summoned Hārūn b. Gharīb, who was his maternal uncle's son, and placed him with him in his residence. When Muʾnis learned of that, his aversion and estrangement increased. Abū al-Hayjāʾ b. Ḥamdān arrived from the mountain region and encamped near Muʾnis with a large army, and correspondence between the caliph and Muʾnis was exchanged. The commanders went out to Muʾnis, and the year ended while they were in that state.
