Translation

✧ The account of the one who borrowed a thousand dinars from his companion and repaid them Imam Ahmad said with his chain of transmission, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that he mentioned that a man from the Children of Israel asked one of the Children of Israel to lend him a thousand dinars. He said: “Bring me witnesses whom I can call to testify.” He said: “Allah is sufficient as a witness.” He said: “Bring me a guarantor.” He said: “Allah is sufficient as a guarantor.” He said: “You have spoken the truth.” So he handed the money over to him until a specified term. Then he went out to sea and accomplished his need. Then he sought a ship that would bring him back by the term he had appointed, but he did not find a ship. So he took a piece of wood and hollowed it out, and placed in it the thousand dinars, along with a letter to its owner. Then he sealed its place. Then he brought it to the sea, then said: “O Allah, You know that I borrowed a thousand dinars from so-and-so. He asked me for a guarantor, and I said: Allah is sufficient as a guarantor, and he accepted that. He asked me for a witness, and I said: Allah is sufficient as a witness, and he accepted that. I have striven to find a ship to send him what is his, but I did not find a ship. I entrust it to You.” Then he threw it into the sea until it disappeared within. Then he went away, looking for a ship, and while doing so he sought a ship to his land. The man who had lent him went out looking, hoping a ship might come with his wealth, and behold, there was the piece of wood containing the wealth. He took it for his family as firewood. When he broke it, he found the wealth and the letter. Then the man who had borrowed from him arrived and brought him a thousand dinars, and said: “By Allah, I have not ceased striving to find a ship to bring you your wealth, but I found no ship before the one on which I came.” He said: “Did you send me anything?” He said: “Did I not tell you that I found no ship before this one on which I came?” He said: “Indeed, Allah has repaid on your behalf what you sent in the piece of wood. So depart with your thousand dinars, rightly guided.”
