Abī Ḥathmah, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī: And Sahl was among the Companions (of the Prophet ﷺ). Al-Ḥusayn was born in the year 219 AH, and he heard from Abū Bakr b. Abī Shaybah and Luwayn and others besides them. Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī, Ibn al-Ṣawwāf, Ibn al-Muẓaffar, Abū Bakr b. Shādhān, and Ibn Shāhīn narrated from him. Al-Dāraquṭnī said: He is thiqah. He used to live in Suwayqat Naṣr on the eastern side. He died in Ṣafar of this year at the age of ninety-six years and some days. Al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Jaṣṣāṣ al-Jawharī, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Jaṣṣāṣ al-Jawharī, Abū ʿAbd Allāh: He possessed immense wealth. The beginning of his affair was that Ibn Ṭūlūn said to him: "What is your trade?" He said: "Jewels." He said: "Nothing shall be bought for us except through his hands," so he amassed wealth. And on the authority of Abū ʿAlī Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Jaṣṣāṣ, he said: My father said to me: "The beginning of my increase came when I was in the hallway of the women's quarters of Abū al-Jaysh Khumārawayh b. Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn, and I used to act as his agent and theirs in purchasing jewels and other things they needed, and I would hardly leave the hallway because of my special standing with them. One day I went out to a stewardess of theirs, and she had a necklace of jewels containing a hundred pearls the like of which I had never seen before, each pearl being worth a thousand dinars. She said: 'It needs to be cut so that it becomes small, and then made into an anklet.' I nearly flew with joy, so I took them and said: 'Hearing and obedience.' And I left immediately. I gathered the merchants and kept buying what I could until I obtained a hundred pearls similar in shape to the kind they wanted. I brought them in the evening and said: 'Cutting this requires time, and today we have cut what we could, and it is this.' I handed over what I had gathered and said: 'The rest we will cut in a few days.' They accepted that. I kept seeking pearls for days until they were gathered, and I brought them two hundred pearls which cost me prices close to a hundred thousand dirhams or about that, and I obtained jewels for two hundred thousand dinars or about that. Then I stayed in their hallway and took for myself a room that was in it and made it my dwelling. From this there accrued to me more than what had accrued to me until blessings multiplied, and I reached what became widely known. When al-Muqtadir punished me and took from me those great sums, I awoke one day in prison in the most despairing state I had ever been in of any relief. Then a servant came to me and said: 'Good news!' I said: 'What is the news?' He said: 'Arise, for you have been released.' So I arose with him, and he passed with me through some of the caliph's houses, intending to bring me out to the house of the Lady, so that she would be the one to release me, because she had interceded for me. My eye fell on bales of coarse cloth of mine that I recognized. They amounted to a hundred bales. I said: 'Isn't this from the cloth that was carried from my house?' He said: 'Yes.' I examined it, and it was a hundred bales. These bales had been sent to me from Egypt, in each bale a thousand dinars, and I had a keeper over it there. They placed it in bales of coarse cloth, and they arrived safely. Because I had no need of money, I did not remove it from the bales and left it in a room in my house, and I locked it. All the money in my house was transferred, and the last thing transferred from it was the cloth, and no one knew what was in it. When I saw it, I strongly hoped for its recovery. Some days after my release, I sent word to the Lady and complained to her of my condition and asked her to give me that cloth so that I might benefit from its price, since it was of no value to them and they had no need of it. She promised to address al-Muqtadir about that. After some days I reminded her, and she said: 'He has ordered it to be handed over to you.' So it was handed over to me in its entirety. I opened it and took from it the hundred thousand dinars, nothing of it lost. I sold of the cloth what I wanted after taking from it the amount I needed." Al-Muḥsin said: Abū al-ʿAbbās Hibat Allāh b. al-Munajjim narrated to me that his grandfather narrated to him: That when al-Muqtadir seized Ibn al-Jaṣṣāṣ, he sent to his house someone to inventory what was in it and carry it away. He said to me: "The one who wrote the inventory said: 'We found among his garments seven hundred wrapped cloaks of jubbahs. What do you suppose might be included in the total of this?'" Al-Muḥsin said: Abū al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAyyāsh narrated to me that he heard a group of trustworthy secretaries saying: They had calculated what the confiscation of Abū ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Jaṣṣāṣ amounted to in the days of al-Muqtadir, and it was six thousand thousand dinars besides what was seized from his house, and apart from what remained of his apparent possessions. Al-Muḥsin said: I heard Abū Muḥammad Jaʿfar b. Warqāʾ al-Shaybānī narrating in the year 349 AH, saying: "I passed by Ibn al-Jaṣṣāṣ some days after his release to his house from the confiscation, and there was friendship and marriage ties between us. I saw him on the balcony of his house overlooking the Tigris in hot weather, barefoot and bareheaded, running from one end of the balcony to the other like a madman. I directed my boat to him and climbed up without permission. When he saw me, he was embarrassed and ran to a sitting room of his. I said to him: 'Woe to you! What has befallen you?' He called for a basin and washed his face and feet and collapsed for a while as if unconscious. Then he said: 'Should I not lose my mind and be in turmoil when such-and-such rolled away from my hands, and such-and-such was taken from me?' And he began enumerating a great amount. I said to him: 'O this man, the limits of wealth are not attainable. Rather, you must know that lives have no substitute, and so do minds and religions. What remains safe for you of that means excellence is with you. This restlessness only afflicts one who fears poverty and need of people, or who loses the habit of eating, drinking, and clothing, or a decrease in status. Be patient until I convince you that there is no one in Baghdād today, after what has left you, more comfortable than you among the people of fine cloaks.' He said: 'Speak.' I said: 'Is not your house [this one which you had before your confiscation, and in it you have furnishings and utensils that give you beauty?]' He said: 'Yes.' I said: 'And has there remained from your real estate in al-Karkh what is worth fifty thousand dinars?' He said: 'Yes.' I said: 'And the fortress house, worth ten thousand dinars?' He said: 'Yes.' I said: 'And your property at Bāb al-Ṭāq, worth thirty thousand dinars?' He said: 'Yes.' I said: 'And your garden such-and-such and your waterworks such-and-such, worth such-and-such?' He said: 'Yes.' I said: 'And your wealth in al-Baṣrah, worth a hundred thousand dinars?' He said: 'Yes.' I kept enumerating to him until the value reached seven hundred thousand dinars. Then I said: 'And tell me truly about what remained to you of jewels, utensils, garments, slave-girls, slaves, and mounts, and about the value of that.' The value of what he mentioned reached three hundred thousand dinars. I said: 'O this man, who in Baghdād today has property amounting to a thousand thousand dinars, and your standing among people is the same as before, and they think that you have retained double this? So why grieve?' He said: He prostrated, praised God, and wept. Then he said: 'By God, thoughts have overwhelmed me until I forgot all of this that it is mine, and it became small in my eye except for longing for what was taken from me. If you had not come to me this hour, the thoughts would have increased upon me until they destroyed my mind. God Almighty sent you, and no one's consolation has been more beneficial than yours. I have not eaten anything for three days. I would like you to stay with me so that we may eat and talk.' So I stayed with him for my day." Ibn al-Jawzī said: It has been mentioned among what was taken from Ibn al-Jaṣṣāṣ five hundred baskets of fine cloth from Egypt, and there were found in his garden many funds buried in green jars and lead-sealed flasks. Ibn al-Jaṣṣāṣ was said to be simple-minded, and he had amazing sayings which I have mentioned in "Kitāb al-Mughaffalīn" (The Book of Simple-Minded People), except that they said: He used to feign them and intended that people think him guileless. I have mentioned some of what indicates his intelligence and acumen in that book. Sulaymān b. Dāwūd b. Kathīr b. Wafdān, Abū Muḥammad al-Ṭūsī Sulaymān b. Dāwūd b. Kathīr b. Muqlah, and Abū ʿAlī used to treat him kindly. One day he complained to him of severe poverty and asked him to speak to ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā the vizier about releasing a stipend for him, but he did not do so. Instead, he scolded Abū ʿAlī and rebuked him. Al-Akhfash learned of this and grieved, and his condition worsened until he ate raw turnips, and it is said that this seized his heart, so he died suddenly." Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. Aḥmad b. ʿUmar b.
