Translation

✧ The war between the Muslims and the Byzantines In the year 315 AH, a raiding party went out from Tarsus into Byzantine territory. The enemy fell upon them, and they fought, and the Byzantines gained the upper hand. They captured four hundred Muslim men and put them to death by slaughter. In this year, the Domesticus marched with a great Byzantine army to the city of Dabil. In it was Nasr al-Subki with a force defending it. The Domesticus had with him siege towers and mangonels, and he had a fire-throwing spear operated by twelve men, such that no one could stand before it because of the intensity and continuity of its fire. It was one of the hardest things for the Muslims. The man shooting it, who engaged directly in combat, was one of their bravest. A Muslim man shot him with an arrow and killed him, and God relieved the Muslims of his evil. The Domesticus used to sit on a high chair overlooking the city and his army, and he commanded them to fight according to what he saw. The people of the city endured him, and he persisted in fighting until they reached the wall of the city and breached it with many breaches. They entered the city, and its people and the troops in it fought them fiercely. The Muslims were victorious, drove the Byzantines out, and killed about ten thousand of them. In this year, in Dhu al-Qaʿdah, Thamil returned to Tarsus from the summer expedition safely, he and those with him, and they encountered a large gathering of Byzantines. They fought, and the Muslims were victorious over them, killing many Byzantines and gaining incalculable booty. Among the booty they gained was that they slaughtered three hundred thousand head of sheep in Byzantine territory, apart from what remained with them. They were met by a man known as Ibn al-Dahhak, one of the Kurdish chiefs, who had a fortress known as al-Jaʿfari. He had apostatized from Islam and gone over to the Byzantine emperor, who gave him a generous gift and ordered him to return to his fortress. The Muslims met him, fought him, captured him, and killed everyone with him.
