✧ Asfar’s seizure of Jurjan In the year 315 AH, Asfar b. Shiruyah al-Daylami seized Jurjan. The beginning of his affair was that he was one of the companions of Makan b. Kali al-Daylami, and he was ill-natured and difficult in companionship, so Makan expelled him from his army. He attached himself to Bakr b. Muhammad b. Alyasaʿ, who was in Naysabur, and served him. Bakr b. Muhammad sent him to Jurjan to conquer it. At that time, Makan b. Kali was in Tabaristan, and his brother Abu al-Hasan b. Kali was in Jurjan. He had imprisoned Abu ʿAli b. Abi al-Husayn al-Utrush al-ʿAlawi with him. One night, Abu al-Hasan b. Kali drank with his companions and dispersed them, remaining alone in a room with the ʿAlawi. He rose against the ʿAlawi to kill him, but the ʿAlawi overpowered him and killed him, then left the house and hid. When morning came, he sent to a group of commanders informing them of the situation. They rejoiced at the killing of Abu al-Hasan b. Kali, brought out the ʿAlawi, clothed him with the qalansuwa, and pledged allegiance to him. Thus he went to sleep a prisoner and woke up an amir. He made ʿAli b. Khurshid the commander of his army, and the army was satisfied with him. They wrote to Asfar b. Shiruyah, informing him of the situation, and summoned him to come to them. He sought permission from Bakr b. Muhammad and traveled to Jurjan. He agreed with ʿAli b. Khurshid, and they took control of that region. Makan b. Kali marched against them from Tabaristan with his army, but they fought him, defeated him, and expelled him from Tabaristan. They remained there with the ʿAlawi. One day, he was playing polo, fell from his mount, and died. Then ʿAli b. Khurshid, the commander of the army, died, and Makan b. Kali returned to Asfar and fought him. Asfar was defeated by him and went back to Bakr b. Muhammad b. Alyasaʿ, who was in Jurjan, and stayed there until Bakr died there. Then the noble amir Nasr b. Ahmad appointed Asfar b. Shiruyah over it, and that was in the year 315 AH. Asfar sent to Mardawij b. Ziyar al-Jili summoning him, and he came to him. He made him commander of the army and treated him well. Mardawij used to sit on a throne of gold with a throne of silver before him, and he would say: “I am Sulayman b. Dawud.” He treated the people of al-Rayy, Qazwin, and Isbahan in an extremely ugly manner. He killed women and children in cradles and seized people’s property. He was in the utmost tyranny, severity, and audacity against the prohibitions of God, mighty and glorious. The Turks killed him, and God gave the Muslims rest from his evil. Praise and grace be to God.
