Translation

✧ Mention of several events In the year 314 AH, Abu al-Hayjaʾ ʿAbd Allah b. Hamdan undertook the tax and estate affairs in al-Mawsil, Qarda, Bazabda, and what goes with them. In it, Thamil went to his post at the frontiers, and he had been in Baghdad. In it, in Rabiʿ al-Akhir, the Byzantines marched to Malatya and its environs under the Domesticus, accompanied by Malih al-Armani, the lord of the passes. They encamped at Malatya and besieged it. Its people held out. The Byzantines opened gates of the suburb and entered, but its people fought them and expelled them from it, and they gained nothing of the city. They destroyed many of its villages, dug up the dead, and mutilated them, then departed. The people of Malatya headed to Baghdad seeking aid in Jumada al-Ula, but they were not helped, so they returned without benefit. The people of Tarsus raided in the summer, gained booty, and returned. In it, the vizier Abu al-Qasim al-Khaqani died, and his son ʿAbd al-Wahhab fled and did not attend his father's washing or the prayer over him. The vizier had been released from his prison before his death. In it, Abu Tahir al-Qarmati set out toward Makkah. News of him reached its people, so they moved their families and wealth to al-Taʾif and elsewhere out of fear of him. In it, al-Kalwadhani wrote to the vizier al-Khasibi, before his dismissal, that Abu Talib al-Nubandajani had begun to act like the lords of the outlying regions, that he had seized the sultan's estates, and had extracted from them a great sum. Abu Talib was fined one hundred thousand dinars. A fire broke out in Baghdad in two places, because of which many people died. In one of them a thousand houses and shops were burned. Letters arrived with the death of the Domesticus, king of the Christians—may God curse him—and the letters were read out from the pulpits. Letters arrived from Makkah that its people were in extreme agitation because of the Qarmati's approach to them and his aiming at them, so they departed from it to al-Taʾif and those regions. A great wind blew in Nasibin, uprooting trees and demolishing houses. Ibn al-Jawzi said: On Sunday, eight days having passed of Shawwal of that year—which is the seventh of Kanun al-Awwal—very heavy snow fell in Baghdad, and because of it there was severe cold, such that it destroyed many palm trees and trees, and oils froze, even beverages, rosewater, vinegar, the large water jars, and the Tigris. One of the hadith masters held a hadith session on the surface of the Tigris atop the ice, and hadith was written from him there. Then the cold broke with rain that fell, and it removed all of that; praise be to God. The pilgrims from Khurasan arrived in Baghdad, and Muʾnis the eunuch excused himself to them, saying that the Qaramita had aimed at Makkah, so they turned back; thus the pilgrimage was not accomplished in this year from the direction of Iraq at all. In this year Abu Jaʿfar b. al-Buhlul the judge withdrew from the judiciary. It was said to him, "Why did you do that?" He said, "I want there to be a gap between the chest and the grave." He died two years later.
