Translation
✧ Mention of several events In the year 313 AH, Ibrāhīm al-Mismaʿī conquered the region of al-Qafaṣ, which is on the borders of Kirmān, and took five thousand persons captive from among them and carried them to Fārs and sold them. In this year, fresh ripe dates became abundant in Baghdādh, so much so that they made dried dates from them and carried them to Wāsiṭ and al-Baṣrah, and the people of Baghdādh were accused of transgression. In this year, the king of the Byzantines wrote to the people of the frontier fortresses commanding them to carry the land tax to him; if they did so, well and good, otherwise he would march against them, slay the men, and take the offspring captive. He said: “It has become clear to me that your governors are weak.” They did not do that, so he marched against them and devastated the lands. He entered Malaṭyah in the year 314 AH, and they destroyed it, took captives from it, and plundered; he stayed there sixteen days. Ibn al-Jawzī said: On a night with one day remaining of al-Muḥarram, a star shot from the direction of the south to the north before sunset, and the world was illuminated by it, and a sound like a violent thunderclap was heard from it. Abū al-Qāsim al-Khātānī, throughout the days of his vizierate, did not cease searching for those among the people of Baghdādh who were accused of corresponding with the Qarmaṭī and professing the Ismāʿīlī faith, until reports became clear to him that a man known as al-Kaʿkī, who lived on the western side, was a chief of the Rāfiḍah, and that he was one of the summoners to the doctrine of the Qarāmiṭah. So he ordered Nāzūk to arrest him. He went to arrest him, but he scaled the walls and fled. He came upon a man in his house who was his deputy, and found in the house men who were in the manner of students. He gave the man three hundred lashes and paraded him on a camel, and it was proclaimed concerning him: “This is the recompense of one who reviles Abū Bakr and ʿUmar ؓ,” and he imprisoned the rest. In Ṣafar, it reached the caliph al-Muqtadir bi-llāh that a group of the Rāfiḍah gathered in the mosque of Barāthā, and they maligned the Companions, and they did not perform the Friday prayer, and they corresponded with the Qarāmiṭah, and they called to the authority of Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl, who had appeared between al-Kūfah and Baghdādh, and they claimed that he was the Mahdī, and they declared themselves innocent of al-Muqtadir and of those who followed him. So he ordered that they be seized, and he sought the legal opinion of the scholars regarding the aforementioned mosque. They gave the opinion that it was a mosque of dissension to be demolished just as the mosque of Ḍirār was demolished. He gave those of them whom he could seize a painful beating, and it was proclaimed concerning them, and the caliph ordered the demolition of the aforementioned mosque. Nāzūk demolished it, and he ordered the vizier al-Khāqānī, so he made its site a cemetery, and a group of the dead were buried there. The people set out for the pilgrimage in Dhū al-Qaʿdah, and Abū Ṭāhir Sulaymān b. Abī Saʿīd al-Jannābī al-Qirmaṭī — may God curse them both — intercepted them. So most of the people returned to their towns, and the pilgrimage was not possible for them that year. It is said that some of them asked him for safe conduct so that they might go, and he granted them safety. The troops of the caliph fought him, but that was of no avail against him due to his rebelliousness and the great might of those with him. The people of Baghdādh were disturbed by that, and the people of the western side departed to the eastern side out of fear of the Qarāmiṭah. The Qirmaṭī entered al-Kūfah and stayed there six days, taking from its wealth what he needed. In it: The Banū Hāshim raised a clamor in the streets because their stipends were delayed from them, and that was on the eighth of al-Muḥarram.
