Translation
✧ The story of the three: the blind man, the leper, and the bald man Al-Bukhārī related with his chain of transmission that Abū Hurayrah reported that he heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "There were three men among the Children of Israel: a leper, a blind man, and a bald man. God willed to test them, so He sent an angel to them. He came to the leper and said: 'What thing is most beloved to you?' He said: 'A good complexion and good skin, for the people have found me repulsive.' He said: 'So he wiped him, and it went away from him. He was given a good complexion and good skin.' He said: 'What kind of wealth is most beloved to you?' He said: 'Camels' — or he said: 'Cows'; there is doubt about that, that the leper and the bald man, one of them said 'camels' and the other said 'cows' — so he was given a pregnant she-camel. He said: 'May you be blessed in it.' He said: 'And he came to the bald man and said: "What thing is most beloved to you?" He said: "Good hair, and that this may go away from me, for the people have found me repulsive." So he wiped him, and it went away, and he was given good hair. He said: "So what kind of wealth is most beloved to you?" He said: "Cows." So he gave him a pregnant cow, and said: "May you be blessed in it."' And he came to the blind man and said: 'What thing is most beloved to you?' He said: 'That God restore my sight to me so that I may see people by it.' He said: 'So he wiped him, and God restored his sight to him.' He said: 'So what kind of wealth is most beloved to you?' He said: 'Sheep.' So he gave him a sheep that had given birth. These two gave birth, and this one produced offspring. So this one had a valley of camels, this one a valley of cows, and this one a valley of sheep. Then he came to the leper in his form and appearance and said: 'A poor man who has been cut off by the ropes in my journey, so there is no means of conveyance today except by God, then by you. I ask you by the One who gave you a good complexion and good skin and wealth, for a camel to get me along on my journey.' He said to him: 'Indeed the obligations are many.' He said to him: 'It is as if I know you. Were you not a leper whom the people found repulsive? Poor, and God, Mighty and Majestic, gave you?' He said: 'I inherited this from noble ancestors!' He said: 'If you are lying, may God return you to what you were.' And he came to the bald man in his form and appearance and said to him the same as he said to this one, and he answered him the same as this one answered him. He said: 'If you are lying, may God return you to what you were.' And he came to the blind man in his form and said: 'A poor man and a wayfarer, and the ropes have cut me off in my journey, so there is no means of conveyance today except by God, then by you. I ask you by the One who restored your sight to you, for a sheep to get me along with in my journey.' He said: 'I was blind and God restored my sight to me, and poor and He enriched me. Take whatever you wish, for by God, I will not burden you today with anything you take for the sake of God, Mighty and Majestic.' He said: 'Keep your wealth, for you have only been tested. He has been pleased with you and displeased with your two companions.' This is the wording of al-Bukhārī in the accounts of the Children of Israel.
