Translation

✧ Mention of the Qarmatians In the year 311 AH, Abū Ṭāhir Sulaymān b. Abī Saʿīd al-Hajarī made for al-Baṣrah. He reached it at night with one thousand seven hundred men, and he had hair ropes. He placed them on the wall, and his companions climbed up and opened the gate, and killed those in charge of it. That was in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir. The governor of al-Baṣrah was Subuk al-Mufliḥī, and he did not become aware of them until dawn, and he did not know that they were the Qarmatians, but believed that they were Arabs who had gathered. He rode out to them and met them, and they killed him and put the sword to the people of al-Baṣrah. The people fled to the fodder and fought the Qarmatians for ten days, and the Qarmatians defeated them, and they killed a great many. The people threw themselves into the water, and most of them drowned. Abū Ṭāhir remained there seventeen days, killing and taking captive whom he wished of its women and children, and plundering what he chose of the wealth of its people. Then he returned to his land Hajar. That was when the caliph sent troops against him, and he fled and left the town desolate. Truly, to Allah we belong and to Him we return. Al-Muqtadir appointed Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Fāriqī over al-Baṣrah, and he went down to it after al-Hajarī had departed from it.
