✧ 311 The dismissal of Ḥāmid and the appointment of Ibn al-Furāt In the year 311 AH, in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir, al-Muqtadir dismissed Ḥāmid b. al-ʿAbbās from the vizierate and ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā from the dīwāns, and bestowed robes of honor on Abū al-Ḥusayn b. al-Furāt, and he was restored to the vizierate. The reason for that was that al-Muqtadir had grown weary of the appeals for help from the children, the women of the harem, the servants, and the retinue on account of the delay in their stipends, for ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā used to delay them, and when several months had accumulated he would give them some and cancel the rest, and he deducted two months' pay each year from the salaries of the officials and others who received stipends, so the people's enmity toward him increased. Ḥāmid b. al-ʿAbbās had also grown weary of residing in Baghdādh, since he had no share in authority other than wearing black, and he disdained ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā's disregard for him, for he used to humiliate him in his rescripts by referring to him in connection with his tax-farming of certain districts, writing: "Let the vizier's jahbadh, may God honor him, release it, and let the deputy of the vizier hasten." When one of Ḥāmid's agents complained to him, he would write on the petition: "The tax-farming contract was concluded with the deputy of the vizier regarding the obligatory rights of the sovereign, so let him instruct his agents to refrain from oppressing the subjects." So Ḥāmid sought permission and set out for Wāsiṭ to look into his tax-farming, and he was granted permission. Words passed between Mufliḥ al-Aswad and Ḥāmid, and Ḥāmid said to him: "I have considered buying a hundred black servants, naming them all Mufliḥ, and giving them to my pages." Mufliḥ bore a grudge against him, and he was a close confidant of al-Muqtadir. So al-Muḥassin b. al-Furāt, together with him, worked on behalf of his father to obtain the vizierate, and he guaranteed vast sums of money and wrote a note in his own hand saying: "If the vizier, ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā, Ibn al-Ḥawārī, Shafīʿ al-Luʾluʾī, Naṣr the chamberlain, Umm Mūsā the stewardess, and the Mādarānīs are handed over, seven million dinars will be extracted from them." Al-Muḥassin was at liberty, and he kept scheming against this group. Ibn al-Furāt mentioned to al-Muqtadir the amount of money Ibn al-Ḥawārī took each year, and he considered it excessive. So ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā was arrested in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir and handed over to Zaydān the stewardess, who imprisoned him in the very room where Ibn al-Furāt had been imprisoned. Ibn al-Furāt was released, robes of honor were bestowed on him, and he assumed the vizierate, and robes of honor were also bestowed on his son al-Muḥassin. This was Ibn al-Furāt's third vizierate. Abū ʿAlī b. Muqla had schemed against Ibn al-Furāt, and he had held certain offices in the days of Ḥāmid. He presented himself before Ibn al-Furāt, and Ibn al-Furāt was the one who had advanced Ibn Muqla, raised him, and treated him well. When it was said that he had schemed against him, he did not believe it until it recurred several times. Then Ḥāmid came up from Wāsiṭ, and Ibn al-Furāt sent someone to arrest him on the road and his companions. Some of his companions were arrested, and Ḥāmid heard of it and fled and hid in Baghdādh. Then Ḥāmid put on the garb of a monk and left his hiding place, walked to Naṣr the chamberlain, and asked permission to enter. He was admitted, and he entered and asked him to convey his case to the caliph. Naṣr summoned the servant Mufliḥ and said: "This man seeks permission to enter to the caliph, when he is with his harem." When Mufliḥ came and saw Ḥāmid, he said: "Welcome to our master the vizier. Where are your black slaves, each one of whom you named Mufliḥ?" Naṣr asked him not to hold it against him, and said to him: "Ḥāmid asks that his prison be in the caliph's palace and that he not be handed over to Ibn al-Furāt." Mufliḥ went in and said the opposite of what was told him, and al-Muqtadir ordered that he be handed over to Ibn al-Furāt. He was sent to him, and he imprisoned him in a fine house and provided him with food, clothing, perfume, and other things such as he had had when he was vizier. Then he summoned him and brought the jurists and officials, and he called him to account for the money that had come to him and demanded it from him. He acknowledged sums amounting to nearly a million dinars, and al-Muḥassin b. Abī al-Ḥasan b. al-Furāt guaranteed him to al-Muqtadir for five hundred thousand dinars, and he handed him over to him. He tortured him with various kinds of torture and sent him to Wāsiṭ with some of his companions to sell what he owned in Wāsiṭ, and he ordered them to give him poison. They gave him poison in roasted eggs, which he had requested, and he was seized with diarrhea. When he arrived at Wāsiṭ, he fell into a deep swoon. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Bazawfarī had taken charge of him, and when he saw his condition, he brought the qāḍī and witnesses to testify that he had no hand in his affair. When they entered to Ḥāmid, he said to them: "Al-Muḥassin's companions gave me poison in roasted eggs, and I am dying of it. Muḥammad had no hand in my affair, but he took a portion of my money and effects and stuffed them into cushions, and a cushion is sold in the market in the presence of the sultan's agent for five dirhams, and he assigns someone to buy it and carry it to him, and in it are goods worth three thousand dinars. So bear witness to that." The chief of intelligence was present, so he wrote that down and sent it, and al-Bazawfarī regretted what he had done. Then Ḥāmid died in Ramaḍān of that year. Then ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā was subjected to a fine of three hundred thousand dinars, and al-Muḥassin b. al-Furāt took him to exact the money from him. He tortured him and slapped him, but he paid him nothing. The news reached the vizier Abū al-Ḥasan b. al-Furāt, and he disapproved of his son's conduct, because ʿAlī had been kind to them during his tenure, and he had given al-Muḥassin, at the time of his downfall, ten thousand dirhams. ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā paid the fine, and Ibn al-Furāt sent him to Makkah and wrote to the governor of Makkah to send him on to Ṣanʿāʾ. Then Ibn al-Furāt arrested Abū ʿAlī b. Muqla and later released him, and he arrested Ibn al-Ḥawārī, who was a close confidant of al-Muqtadir, and handed him over to his son al-Muḥassin, who tortured him with severe torture. Al-Muḥassin was shameless, ill-mannered, oppressive, and extremely harsh, and people called him "the wicked son of the good." He sent Ibn al-Ḥawārī to al-Ahwāz to extract the money he owned, and the agent in charge of him beat him until he died. He also arrested al-Ḥusayn b. Aḥmad and Muḥammad b. ʿAlī, the two Mādarānīs. Al-Ḥusayn had governed Egypt and Syria, and he fined the two of them one million seven hundred thousand dinars. Then he fined a group of secretaries and ruined them. Then Ibn al-Furāt alarmed al-Muqtadir about Muʾnis the servant and advised him to send him away from the capital to Syria so that he would be there. He heeded his words and ordered him to depart. He had just returned from a military campaign, and he asked to remain for the few days left of the month of Ramaḍān, and that was granted, and he departed on a day of heavy rain. The reason for that was that when Muʾnis arrived, he mentioned to al-Muqtadir the fines Ibn al-Furāt had imposed on the people, and what his son did in torturing and beating them, along with other misdeeds of theirs. Ibn al-Furāt feared him, so he removed him from al-Muqtadir's presence. Then Ibn al-Furāt schemed against Naṣr the chamberlain and made al-Muqtadir covet his wealth and its abundance. Naṣr sought refuge with al-Muqtadir's mother, and she shielded him from Ibn al-Furāt.
