Translation

✧ The War of Sīmjūr with Abū al-Ḥusayn b. al-ʿAlawī We have already mentioned the killing of Laylā b. al-Nuʿmān, and that Jurjān was left behind in it by Bāris, the ghulām of Qurātikīn. When Laylā b. al-Nuʿmān was killed, Qurātikīn returned to Jurjān, and his ghulām Bāris sought a pledge of security from him, but Qurātikīn killed him and departed from Jurjān. Then Abū al-Ḥusayn b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī al-Uṭrūsh al-ʿAlawī, whose father was titled al-Nāṣir, arrived there and remained. Al-Saʿīd Naṣr b. Aḥmad sent Sīmjūr al-Dawātī against him with four thousand horsemen. He encamped two farsakhs from Jurjān and besieged Abū al-Ḥusayn for about a month in this year. Abū al-Ḥusayn marched out against him with eight thousand men from the Daylamites and the Jurjānīs, with Surkhāb b. Wahsūdhān, the cousin of Mākān b. Kālī al-Daylamī, as commander of his army. They fought a great battle. Sīmjūr had placed an ambush from among his companions, but they were slow in coming to him, so Sīmjūr was routed. Abū al-Ḥusayn's men fell upon Sīmjūr's camp and busied themselves with plunder and raiding. Then the ambush came out upon them after the victory and killed about four thousand men from the Daylamites and the Jurjānīs. Abū al-Ḥusayn was routed, rode into the sea, then returned to Astarābādh, and the remnants of his companions gathered to him. Surkhāb had pursued Sīmjūr in his defeat. When he returned, he saw his companions slain and scattered, so he went to Astarābādh, taking with him the families and baggage of his companions, and remained there with Abū al-Ḥusayn b. al-Nāṣir. Then Sīmjūr heard of the victory of his companions, so he returned to them and remained in Jurjān. Then Surkhāb fell ill and died. Ibn al-Nāṣir returned to Sāriyah and appointed Mākān b. Kālī as his deputy over Astarābādh. The Daylamites gathered to him, put him forward, and made him commander over themselves. Then Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd Allāh al-Balghamī and Sīmjūr marched to the gate of Astarābādh and fought Mākān b. Kālī. When their stay grew long, they agreed with him that he should leave Astarābādh for Sāriyah, and they offered him money for this so that it would appear to the people that they had conquered it; then they would depart from it and he would return to it. He did so and went to Sāriyah. Then they departed from Astarābādh, and when they had left, Mākān b. Kālī returned to it. Then Bughrā left it, (going to Jurjān, and he behaved badly toward its people. Mākān marched out against him, so Bughrā returned) to Naysābūr. Mākān remained in Jurjān. We shall mention the beginning of Mākān's affairs and relate them at the time of his killing in the year 329 AH.
