✧ The emergence of Ilyās b. Isḥāq b. Aḥmad b. Asad al-Sāmānī Then Ilyās (b. Isḥāq) b. Aḥmad—previously mentioned as having gone out with his father and fled to Farghāna—emerged. When he reached Farghāna, he stayed there until he emerged a second time. At his emergence, he sought the help of Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn b. Matt, and gathered from the Turks, so that thirty thousand horsemen gathered with him. He made for Samarqand in opposition to al-Saʿīd Naṣr b. Aḥmad. Naṣr sent against him Abū ʿAmr, Muḥammad b. Asad, and others with two thousand five hundred men. They lay in ambush outside Samarqand on the day of Ilyās's arrival. When he arrived, and he and those with him busied themselves with dismounting, the ambush came out against them from among the trees, and put the swords to them. Ilyās and his companions fled. Ilyās reached Farghāna, while Ibn Matt reached Asbījāb, and from there to the district of Ṭirāz. The dihqān of the district where he had alighted was written to, and he was enticed, and he seized him and killed him, and sent his head to Bukhārā. Ibn Matt was brave. At his emergence, he had seized camels, so his companions came seeking them from him. He said: "I shall return them to you at Baghdādh," meaning that he would not return anything from Baghdādh, confident in the size and strength of his gathering. But the decrees brought what was not in the reckoning. Then Ilyās returned and emerged a third time, aided by Abū al-Faḍl b. Abī Yūsuf, the lord of al-Shāsh. He sent against him Muḥammad b. Alyasaʿ, who fought them. Ilyās fled to Kāshghar, and Abū al-Faḍl was captured and carried to Bukhārā, where he died. As for Ilyās, he married into the family of the dihqān of Kāshghar, Ṭughāntikīn, and settled there. Then Muḥammad b. al-Muẓaffar governed Farghāna, and Ibn Isḥāq returned there in opposition. Muḥammad b. al-Muẓaffar fought him and defeated him once again, so he returned to Kāshghar. Muḥammad b. al-Muẓaffar wrote to him and won him over, and was kind to him, so Ilyās trusted him and came to Bukhārā. Al-Saʿīd honored him and married him into his family, and he stayed with him.
