✧ The Killing of Laylā b. al-Nuʿmān al-Daylamī In the year 309 AH, Laylā b. al-Nuʿmān al-Daylamī was killed. This Laylā was one of the commanders of the sons of al-Uṭrūsh al-ʿAlawī, and the governorship of Jurjān was his. Al-Ḥasan b. al-Qāsim al-Dāʿī had appointed him over it in the year 308 AH. The sons of al-Uṭrūsh used to write to him: “The supporter of the religion of God, the avenger for the family of the Messenger of God ﷺ, Laylā b. al-Nuʿmān.” He was generous, lavish with wealth, brave, and bold in facing terrors. He marched from Jurjān to al-Dāmaghān, and its people fought him. He inflicted a great slaughter among them and returned to Jurjān. The people of al-Dāmaghān then built a fortress to protect them. Qurātikīn marched against him at Jurjān and fought him at about ten farsakhs from Jurjān. Qurātikīn was defeated, and his ghulām Bāris sought safe conduct from Laylā, along with a thousand horsemen. Laylā honored him and married him to his sister. Abū al-Qāsim b. Ḥafṣ, the nephew of Aḥmad b. Sahl, also sought safe conduct from him, and Laylā honored him. Then the troops became numerous for Laylā b. al-Nuʿmān, and funds became tight for him. He marched toward Naysābūr by order of al-Ḥasan b. al-Qāsim al-Dāʿī and at the urging of Abū al-Qāsim b. Ḥafṣ, where Qurātikīn was. He entered it in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of the year 308 AH and established the khuṭbah there for the Dāʿī. Al-Saʿīd Naṣr sent Ḥammūyah b. ʿAlī from Bukhārā against him. They met at Ṭūs and fought. Most of the companions of Ḥammūyah b. ʿAlī fled until they reached Marw, while Ḥammūyah, Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Balghamī, Abū Jaʿfar Ṣuʿlūk, Khwārizm Shāh, and Sīmjūr al-Dawātī stood firm. They fought, and some of Laylā’s companions fled, and Laylā departed in defeat. Laylā entered a lane that had no exit for him, and Bughrā caught up with him there. Laylā could not escape, so he dismounted and hid in a house. Bughrā seized him and sent word to Ḥammūyah informing him of that. Ḥammūyah sent someone who cut off Laylā’s head and set it on a spear. When his companions saw it, they sought safe conduct and were granted it. Then Ḥammūyah said to the troops: “God has given you power over the devils of the Jīl and the Daylam, so annihilate them and be rid of them for all time.” But they did not do so, and each commander protected a group, so some of them later went out. Laylā was killed in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of the year 309 AH, and his head was carried to Baghdādh. Bāris, the ghulām of Qurātikīn, remained in Jurjān. It is said that when Ḥammūyah marched to fight Laylā, someone said to him: “Laylā considers you slow in attacking him.” He replied: “I put on one of my boots for war this year, and the other next year.” His saying reached Laylā, who said: “But I put on one of my boots for war while sitting, and the second while standing and mounted.” When Laylā was killed, Ḥammūyah said: “Thus is the one who hastens to war.”
