✧ The rebellion of Manṣūr b. Isḥāq In the year 312 AH, Manṣūr b. Isḥāq b. Aḥmad b. Asad rebelled against the amīr Naṣr b. Aḥmad, and al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī al-Marwarūdhī and Muḥammad b. Ḥayd agreed with him in the rebellion. The reason for that was that when al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī conquered Sijistān the first time, as we have mentioned, on behalf of the amīr Aḥmad b. Ismāʿīl, he hoped to govern it, but Manṣūr b. Isḥāq—this one—was appointed over it, so its people rebelled and imprisoned Manṣūr. The amīr Aḥmad sent ʿAlī again, and he conquered it a second time, and he hoped to govern it, but Sīmjūr was appointed over it. We have mentioned all of this. When Sīmjūr governed it, ʿAlī felt uneasy about that and was alienated by it. He spoke with Manṣūr b. Isḥāq about agreeing and supporting each other after the death of the amīr Aḥmad: the emirate of Khurāsān would belong to Manṣūr, and al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī would be his deputy over his provinces. They agreed upon that. When the amīr Aḥmad b. Ismāʿīl was killed, Manṣūr b. Isḥāq was in Nīshāpūr, and al-Ḥusayn was in Herat. Al-Ḥusayn showed disobedience and marched to Manṣūr urging him to what they had agreed upon. He also rebelled, and allegiance was proclaimed to Manṣūr in Nīshāpūr. Ḥammūyah b. ʿAlī set out towards it from Bukhārā with a huge army to fight them both. It happened that Manṣūr died, and it was said that al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī poisoned him. When Ḥammūyah approached him, al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī marched from Nīshāpūr to Herat and stayed there. Muḥammad b. Ḥayd was in charge of the police of Bukhārā for a long time. He was sent from Bukhārā to Nīshāpūr for some business he was to carry out. He arrived there, then returned from it without orders. They wrote to him from Bukhārā reproaching him, so he feared for himself. He turned away from the road to al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī in Herat. Al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī then marched from Herat to Nīshāpūr, leaving his brother Manṣūr b. ʿAlī as his deputy in Herat, and he took possession of Nīshāpūr. Aḥmad b. Sahl was sent from Bukhārā against him to fight him. Aḥmad began with Herat, besieged it, and took it, and Manṣūr b. ʿAlī sought safety from him. Aḥmad marched from Herat to Nīshāpūr, and his arrival there was in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of the year 306 AH. He encamped against al-Ḥusayn, besieged him, and fought him. Al-Ḥusayn's companions were defeated, al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī was taken prisoner, and Aḥmad b. Sahl stayed in Nīshāpūr. It would have been proper to mention Aḥmad's capture of Nīshāpūr and the capture of al-Ḥusayn in the year 306 AH, but we thought it best to gather the narrative of the event together so that its beginning would not be forgotten. As for Ibn Ḥayd, he was in Marw. When news reached him of Aḥmad b. Sahl's capture of Nīshāpūr and his capture of al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī, he went to him. Aḥmad seized him, took his wealth and his retinue, and sent him and al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī to Bukhārā. As for Ibn Ḥayd, he was sent to Khwārizm and died there. As for al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī, he was imprisoned in Bukhārā until Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Jayhānī got him released, and he returned to the service of the amīr Naṣr b. Aḥmad. One day while he was with him, the amīr Naṣr asked for water. Water was brought in a jug of poor workmanship. Al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī said to Aḥmad b. Ḥammūyah, who was present: "Does your father not send as a gift to the amīr from Nīshāpūr some of these fine, clean jugs?" Aḥmad said: "My father sends as gifts to the amīr the likes of you and the likes of Aḥmad b. Sahl, and the likes of Laylā al-Daylamī, not jugs." Al-Ḥusayn fell silent, confounded, and Naṣr was pleased with his words.
