Translation
✧ The affair of Egypt with the ʿAlid al-Mahdī In the year 312 AH, Abū Muḥammad ʿUbayd Allāh al-ʿAlawī, surnamed al-Mahdī, dispatched an army from Ifrīqiyya under one of his commanders named Ḥabāsa to Alexandria, and he took possession of it. His journey was by sea. Then he marched from there to Egypt and encamped between Egypt and Alexandria. When this reached al-Muqtadir, he sent Muʾnis the eunuch with an army to Egypt to fight Ḥabāsa, and supplied him with weapons and money. He marched there, and the two armies met in Jumādā al-Ūlā. They fought a fierce battle, and a great number from both sides was killed, and a like number wounded. Then there was another engagement of similar nature between them, then a third and a fourth engagement, in which the Maghribīs, the followers of the ʿAlid, were routed, killed, and taken captive. The total number of those killed, together with the captives, was seven thousand, and the rest fled. This battle was at the end of Jumādā al-Ākhira, and they returned to the West. When they reached the West, al-Mahdī killed Ḥabāsa. In this year, ʿArūba b. Yūsuf al-Kutāmī revolted against al-Mahdī in al-Qayrawān, and a great multitude of Kutāma and Berbers gathered around him. Al-Mahdī sent out his client Ghālib against them, and they fought a fierce battle in the vicinity of al-Qayrawān. ʿArūba and his cousins were killed, and with them a countless multitude. The heads of their leaders were gathered in a basket and carried to al-Mahdī. He said: "How astonishing are the affairs of this world! This basket has gathered the heads of these men, though the expanse of the Maghrib was too narrow for their armies."
