Translation

✧ Mention of several events In the year two hundred and ninety-eight, the amir Ahmad b. Isma'il released his paternal uncle Ishaq b. Ahmad from his prison, and restored him to Samarqand and Farghanah. In it, Muhammad b. Ja'far al-'Abarta'i died, as did Qunbuj the eunuch, governor of Fars, so he appointed over it 'Abd Allah b. Ibrahim al-Misma'i, and added Kirman to him. In it, Umm Musa al-Hashimiyyah was made stewardess of the palace of al-Muqtadir bi-Allah, and she used to deliver messages from al-Muqtadir and his mother to the vizier. We have mentioned her only because she later had such authority in the state as required mentioning her; otherwise, omitting her would have been more appropriate. In it, in Rajab, al-Muzaffar b. Jakh, governor of Yemen, died, and was carried to Makkah and buried there. The caliph appointed Mulahiz over Yemen after him. Al-Fadl b. 'Abd al-Malik al-Hashimi led the people in the pilgrimage this year. In it, in Sha'ban, a group was seized in Baghdad, said to be followers of a man who claimed divinity, known as Muhammad b. Bishr. In it, a violent, hot, yellow wind blew at Hadithat al-Mawsil, and many people died from its intense heat. In it, al-Qasim b. Sima came from the land of the Byzantines and entered Baghdad with him prisoners and captives, in whose hands were banners on which were crosses of gold, and a multitude of prisoners. In it, gifts arrived from the governor of Khurasan, Ahmad b. Isma'il b. Ahmad al-Samani, including one hundred and twenty slave boys with their mounts, weapons, and what they needed, fifty falcons, fifty camels carrying fine cloths, fifty ratls of musk, and other things. In Sha'ban of it, two men were seized, one called Abu Kathirah and the other known as al-Shimri. They mentioned that they were followers of a man called Muhammad b. Bishr and that he claimed divinity. In it, reports arrived that the Byzantines had made for al-Ladhiqiyyah. In it, the qadi 'Abd Allah b. 'Ali b. Abi al-Shawarib suffered hemiplegia, so his son Muhammad was appointed in his place. From Talhah b. Muhammad b. Ja'far, who said: 'Abd Allah b. 'Ali b. Muhammad b. 'Abd al-Malik b. Abi al-Shawarib continued as governor—that is, over the judiciary—of the eastern side of Baghdad and also over al-Karkh from the month of Rabi' I in the year two hundred and ninety-six until the night of Saturday, thirteen nights remaining of Jumada II in the year two hundred and ninety-eight, when paralysis struck him and he was silenced, and his son Muhammad was appointed as his successor over all his work on Thursday, twelve nights remaining of Jumada II in the year two hundred and ninety-eight. He was noble, handsome, and of broad character, and he had no harshness; so matters became disordered under his supervision, and he was deceived in most of his affairs. All the affairs of the sultan had become disordered, and he continued as successor to his father until the year three hundred and one, and died.
