✧ Those of the Notables Who Died in the Year Two Hundred and Ninety-Seven Aḥmad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Marzūq b. ʿAṭiyya, Abū ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī ʿAwf al-Buzūrī: Aḥmad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Marzūq b. ʿAṭiyya, Abū ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī ʿAwf al-Buzūrī. He heard Suwayd b. Saʿīd, ʿUthmān b. Abī Shayba, ʿAmr b. Muḥammad al-Nāqid, and many others. Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī, Ibn al-Ṣawwāf, and others narrated from him. He was trustworthy, abstinent, noble, reliable, possessed of ample worldly means, and a praiseworthy way in goodness. The street of Ibn Abī ʿAwf, which is traversed to the Canal of the Qallāʾīn, is named after him. He had standing with the sultan and close ties to ʿUbayd Allāh b. Sulaymān the vizier, and affection in the hearts of the common people. From Abū ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī ʿAwf, who said: [The cause of] my close ties to ʿUbayd Allāh b. Sulaymān was that one day I passed through the mosque of [al-Manṣūr] in the city and found him detained for three hundred dinars owed to a creditor of his, while he was in the aftermath of a calamity. I used to know his rank due to affection between us, so I said to him: 'For what reason, may God honor you, are you sitting here?' He said: 'I am detained by this man for three hundred dinars which he has against me.' He said: I asked the creditor to grant him a delay, but he said: 'I will not do so.' So I said to him: '[Then the money] is yours, on condition that you wait for me until after a week, so that I may give it to you.' He said: 'Will you give me your written acknowledgment of that?' So I summoned an inkwell and a note, and I wrote for him a guarantee for that until a month, and he was satisfied and left. ʿUbayd Allāh rose and began to thank me, so I said: 'Complete, may God support you, my joy by coming with me to my house.' I mounted him on my donkey and walked behind him until we entered my house. We ate, and he slept. When he awoke, I brought him a purse and said: 'Perhaps you are in straitened circumstances, so I ask you by God to take from it whatever you wish.' [He said:] He took some dinars from it, rose, and left. My wife then came and began to blame me and reproach me, saying: 'You guaranteed on his behalf what you cannot fulfill, and you were not content until you gave him something else as well!' I said: 'O woman, I did a beautiful thing and rendered a great favor to a free, noble, eminent man from a good family. If God benefits me by that, then it is He whom I intended; and if it is otherwise, it will not be lost with God!' Time passed after this affair, the debt fell due, and the creditor came demanding payment from me. I was on the verge of selling a property of mine and paying its price to him, and I did not deem it proper to demand repayment from ʿUbayd Allāh. I put the man off with a promise I made [to him] for some days. Then after two days, a note from ʿUbayd Allāh came summoning me, so I went to him. He said: 'I have received the produce of an estate of mine [that had escaped being sold during the calamity], and the amount of its price is the amount which you guaranteed on my behalf. So take it, sell it, and settle that with the creditor.' I said: 'I will do so.' He brought the produce to me, and I sold it, and I carried the entire price to him and said: 'You are constrained, and I will pay the creditor and give him part from my own means, [so be at ease with this].' He tried hard to make me take something from it, but I swore that I would not, and I preserved the price for him. The creditor came, and I gave him part from my own means, and I put him off for a while. Only a little time passed before ʿUbayd Allāh was appointed to the vizierate, and he summoned me that very day, rose from his seat for me, and raised me to the heavens. Through him I earned these riches in which I now find myself. ʿAlī b. al-Muḥsin said: Abū al-Ḥasan Aḥmad b. Yūsuf b. Yaʿqūb [b. Isḥāq] b. Buhlūl mentioned that his father narrated to him, saying: I left the presence of ʿUbayd Allāh b. Sulaymān during his vizierate, heading for the vestibule. Ibn Abī ʿAwf came out, and the doorkeepers, chamberlains, and people shouted: 'Bring a mount for Abū ʿAbd Allāh! [Bring a mount for Abū ʿAbd Allāh!]' When his mount was brought forward for him to ride, [the vizier came out to ride]. He saw him, and Abū ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī ʿAwf stepped aside and ordered his mount to be taken away so that the vizier's mount might be brought forward. The vizier swore that he would not ride, nor would his mount be brought forward, until Ibn Abī ʿAwf had ridden. He said: I saw him standing, and the people standing because of his standing, until Ibn Abī ʿAwf's mount was brought forward [and he mounted it]. Then the vizier's mount was brought forward, and he mounted, and they rode together. Ibn Abī ʿAwf died in Shawwāl of this year. Ibrāhīm b. Hāshim b. al-Ḥusayn b. Hāshim, Abū Isḥāq al-Bayyiʿ, known as al-Baghawī: Ibrāhīm b. Hāshim b. al-Ḥusayn b. Hāshim, Abū Isḥāq al-Bayyiʿ, known as al-Baghawī: He was born in the year two hundred and seven. Dāwūd in Baghdad when a slave girl sang some of his poetry, which is [his words]: I complain of a sick heart which you are destroying, the complaint of a sick man to a beloved who consoles him. My illness increases in abundance with the days, and you diminish the magnitude of what I suffer. God has forbidden killing me in love out of folly, and you, O my killer, unjustly make it lawful. Muḥammad b. Dāwūd said: 'How can one retrieve this?' The judge Abū ʿUmar said: Alas, the riders have carried it away. Ibn al-Jawzī said, [may God have mercy on him]: Muḥammad b. The chamberlain ordered him to be in line with his adversary, but he did not do so, out of self-importance due to his high standing in the state. When the judgment was concluded, the servant departed and told al-Muʿtaḍid of the incident and wept before him.
