Abī ʿAlī al-Daqqāq reported that he heard ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Shihāb say: “Khalaf b. ʿAmr al-ʿUkbarī died in the year 296 AH. He had thirty signet rings and thirty walking sticks; every day of the month he wore a different ring and carried a different stick. When the next month came, he began wearing them anew. He had a whip hanging up. I said to him, ‘What is this?’ He replied, ‘It is related: Hang up your whip, and your family will fear you.’ He was refined. He died in ʿUkbarā.” ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Muʿtazz bi-llāh: the name of al-Muʿtazz was Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar al-Mutawakkil. ʿAbd Allāh’s kunyah was Abū al-ʿAbbās. He was born in Shaʿbān of the year 247 AH. He was a man of abundant literary culture, outstanding in merit, and of beautiful poetry. He studied under al-Mubarrad, Thaʿlab, and others. He had remarkable sayings of wisdom. He used to say: “The breaths of a living man are his steps toward his appointed term.” “Greed may lead one to the watering place but not bring him back.” “A drinker may choke on water before he is quenched.” “Whoever goes beyond what suffices him, abundance will not enrich him.” “The greater the worth of that for which men vie, the greater the calamity of losing it.” “Whomever cupidity sets on a journey, pursuit will exhaust him.” “Fortune comes to him who does not come to it.” “The most wretched of people is the one closest to the ruler, just as the things closest to the fire are the quickest to burn.” “Whoever shares with the ruler in the might of this world shares with him in the abasement of the Hereafter.” “The people of this world are riders who are driven along while they sleep.” “Cupidity diminishes a man’s worth and does not increase his share.” “It should console you regarding the envious man that he begrudges the time of your joy.” “Opportunity passes quickly and returns only with difficulty.” “Generosity is the guardian of honor.” “When secrets have many keepers, they are more likely to be lost.” “Eloquence is the attainment of the meaning [without a lengthy journey of words].” “The abasement of dismissal laughs at the arrogance of office.” “Impatience is more exhausting than patience.” “The estate of the deceased is a consolation to the heirs for his loss.” “Do not disfigure the faces of pardon with reproach.” “He who openly shows enmity to you has warned you.” ʿUthmān b. ʿĪsā b. Hārūn al-Hāshimī said: I was with ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Muʿtazz. Abū Aḥmad b. al-Munajjim had written a note to his brother Abū al-Qāsim inviting him, but the messenger made a mistake and came and gave it to Ibn al-Muʿtazz while I was with him. He read it and knew it was not meant for him, so he turned it over and wrote: The messenger called me, though you did not, but rather for ʿAlī Abū al-Qāsim. The messenger took the note and went away, and after a while he returned, and on it was written: O master who has become a source of pride for Hāshim, since he is of Hāshim, You have graciously confirmed the messenger’s error, as a lord shows grace to a servant. How unbearable it is when you renew [your kindness], while your dismissal is like honey to the one who tastes it. May Abū Aḥmad and Abū al-Qāsim be your ransom from all that you dread. He said: So he rose and went to him. Abū Bakr al-Ṣūlī said: ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Muʿtazz fell ill, and his father came to visit him and said, “What has stricken you, my son?” So he began to recite: O you who blame me, do not blame me: look at the beauty of her face, and you will excuse me. Look: do you see anyone more beautiful than her? If you see her like, then blame me. I have the madness of love, and I am not mad; the madness of love is the madness of madness. He said: His father investigated the matter until he came upon her, and he bought the slave girl with whom he was infatuated for seven thousand dinars and sent her to him. He also composed: Those whom you used to mention as being in good state have passed away despite you, and I used to forbid you [from them]. Do not seek life with anyone other than them, for none will bring you to life except He who causes you to die. And among his brilliant poetry: Say to the willow branch that is bent beneath the full moon of darkness and above the sand dune: You sought to conceal what is in my heart, but you betrayed it— sighs that overcome the speech of passion, and tears that say on the cheek: O one who weeps affectively, thus is weeping. There is no place for people in my heart; your love increased in it until it was full. Would that a long night on the Ṣarāt were ransom for the nights of Surra man raʾā. But where is musk compared to what protected it, and incense from Bukhārā, and yellow from Qazā. And he also composed: Who will give me a heart fashioned from rock in a body of moist pearl? I wounded his cheeks with my glance, and I did not cease until he took retaliation from my heart. And he composed: I have been afflicted with the friends of this age, so I have reduced my share of them by shunning them. Every one of them, if you examine them, is a friend in public, an enemy in absence. And he composed: By my life, O my life, drink the cup and pass it on, before time afflicts us with separation and scattering. Do not betray me when I die and my mourners rise for me. Indeed the one who keeps faith with my covenant is he who remains faithful after my death. And he composed: One who races to his wealth, while his heir inherits it— man does not linger long in this world. How many a miser chokes over his money bags who will cry out in the balance of the inheritance. And he also composed: O you of wealth and overwhelming power, and of the commanding, forbidding dynasty, O devils of the children of Adam, O slaves of wicked lust, await this world, for it has drawn near, and before long it will give birth to the Hereafter. And he also composed: Do you see the neighbors who called to one another at the departure of the beloved before noon? They knew that I remain, while my heart departs with them before the camels, like the cup of al-ʿAzīz among the baggage of the people, while they know not what is in the saddlebags. How honored is the beloved, how abased the lover, how deadly is love to men. And he composed: O soul, be patient, or else perish of anguish: time is built upon what you detest. Do not reckon that blessings whose pleasure delights you are anything but keys to doors of grief. And he composed: You have prolonged your blame and tormented me, O blamer; I am afflicted, so leave me—my speech is long. My passion is inward and outward, ancient and new, subtle and great. Alas, why does this night not end? Thus is the night of every lover prolonged. I stay awake watching the stars of darkness until morning, alone, while my tears flow. Ibn al-Jawzī said: We have mentioned that the army rose against al-Muqtadir bi-llāh, deposed him, and gave allegiance to ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Muʿtazz. Then the supporters of al-Muqtadir came out and fought, so Ibn al-Muʿtazz went into hiding. His rule lasted only part of a day. He was seized and handed over to Muʾnis the eunuch, who killed him and sent him to his house on the Ṣarāt, where he was buried. That was in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year. ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. Bassām mourned him, saying: May God reward you well, O dead one by whom I am afflicted: enough for you in knowledge, letters, and noble lineage. There is no “if only” or “would that” to diminish him; only the trade of letters overtook him. Abū al-Qāsim al-Karīzī said: Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbbās recited to us that ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Muʿtazz said on the night in the morning of which he was killed: O soul, be patient; perhaps good is your outcome. Your world has betrayed you after long security. Birds passed by us at dawn, and I said to them: Blessed are you! Would that I were you—blessed are you! If your destination is eastward, then peace be upon the bank of the Ṣarāt; convey it if that is your route: from one bound by fates with no escape, weeping blood over a beloved companion who weeps for him. How many a secure one whose death has drawn near, and how many an escapee from among the snares! I think this is the last of the days of my life, and soon the day will come when the mourner weeps for me. Ibn Qutaybah said: When they led ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Muʿtazz to the place where he perished, he began to recite: Say to those who gloat over us: gently— before you lie calamities and misfortunes. It is time that must inevitably bring some of its sins upon you. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn b. Ḥabīb, Abū Ḥusayn al-Wādiʿī al-Qāḍī: he was from the people of Kufa. He came to Baghdad and narrated there from Aḥmad b. Yūnus al-Yarbūʿī, Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd al-Ḥimmānī, and Jandal b. Wāliq. Ibn Ṣāʿid, al-Maḥāmilī, and al-Najjād narrated from him. He was discerning and compiled a musnad. Al-Dāraquṭnī said: “He was trustworthy.” He died in Kufa in this year. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn, known as Ḥamdī: he narrated from Bishr b. al-Walīd al-Kindī and Ḥayyān b. Bishr al-Asadī. Ibn Makhlad narrated from him. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn b. Ḥamdawayh al-Ḥarbī: he narrated from Yaʿqūb b. Siwāk. Abū Ṭālib b. al-Buhlūl narrated from him. Muḥammad b. Dāwūd b. al-Jarrāḥ, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Kātib: the paternal uncle of the vizier ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā. He was born in the year 243 AH on the night in which Ibrāhīm b. al-ʿAbbās al-Ṣūlī died. He narrated from ʿUmar b. Shabbah and others. He was a man of excellence among the scholars of the secretaries, knowledgeable about the history of men, the reports of the caliphs and viziers, and he wrote works on that. He died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year. Yūsuf b. Mūsā b. ʿAbd Allāh, Abū Yaʿqūb al-Qaṭṭān al-Marwarūdhī: he traveled to distant regions in pursuit of ḥadīth and narrated from Ibn Rāhawayh, ʿAlī b. Ḥujr, and Abū Kurayb. Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī narrated from him, and he was trustworthy [and truthful]. He died in Marw after returning from his second pilgrimage in this year.
