Translation

✧ Mention of several events In this year, al-Qāsim b. Sīmā and a group of commanders were dispatched in pursuit of al-Ḥusayn b. Ḥamdān. They marched until they reached Qarqīsiyāʾ and al-Raḥbah, but did not catch him. Al-Muqtadir wrote to Abū al-Hayjāʾ ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥamdān (who was the governor of al-Mawṣil), ordering him to seek his brother al-Ḥusayn. He and al-Qāsim b. Sīmā marched, and they met near Takrīt. Al-Ḥusayn was defeated, so he sent his brother Ibrāhīm b. Ḥamdān to request safe-conduct. This was granted, and he entered Baghdādh. He was robed in honor and appointed over Qumm and Qāshān. He proceeded there and removed al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAmr from it. In this year, Bāris, the slave of Ismāʿīl al-Sāmānī, arrived and was appointed over Diyār Rabīʿah. In this year, there was a battle between Ṭāhir and Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. al-Layth on one side and Subkarī, the slave of ʿAmr, on the other. Subkarī captured Ṭāhir and sent him and his brother Yaʿqūb b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr to al-Muqtadir along with his secretary ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Jaʿfar al-Shīrāzī. They were brought into Baghdādh as prisoners and imprisoned. Subkarī had taken control of Fārs without the caliph's order. When his secretary arrived, his position was settled in exchange for money he would pay. His arrival in Baghdādh was in the year 297. In this year, Muʾnis al-Muẓaffar the eunuch was robed in honor and ordered to march to raid the Byzantines. He set out with a large force and raided from the direction of Malaṭyah, accompanied by Abū al-Aʿazz al-Sulamī. He was victorious, captured spoils, took a group of them prisoner, and returned. In this year, Yūsuf b. Abī al-Sāj was appointed over the provinces of Armīniyyah and Adharbayjān and guaranteed them for 120,000 dinars. He marched there from al-Dīnawar. In this year, Muḥammad b. Ṭāhir b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir died. In this year, Sawsan, the chamberlain of al-Muqtadir, was killed. The reason was that he had a role in the affair of Ibn al-Muʿtazz. When Ibn al-Muʿtazz was given allegiance and another was made chamberlain, Sawsan adhered to al-Muqtadir. When Ibn al-Furāt became vizier, he took sole charge of affairs, and Sawsan became his enemy and worked to ruin his situation. Ibn al-Furāt informed al-Muqtadir bi-llāh of Sawsan's situation and that he had been among those who aided Ibn al-Muʿtazz. He arrested him and killed him. On Saturday, four nights remaining of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, a great snow fell in Baghdad, so much so that about four fingers' depth accumulated on the rooftops. This is considered very strange in Baghdad. The year had not ended before people went out to pray for rain because the rain was delayed from its usual time. In this year, al-Muqtadir ordered that no Jew or Christian be employed in the government bureaus. They were confined to their homes and ordered to wear honey-colored clothing and to place patches between their shoulders so that they might be recognized by them. They were subjected to humiliation wherever they were. In this year, al-Faḍl b. ʿAbd al-Malik al-Hāshimī led the people on the pilgrimage. Many people returned because of the scarcity of water along the route. Verily, to Allah we belong and to Him we return.
