The deposition of al-Muqtadir and the accession of b. al-Mu'tazz

Translation

✧ An incident from which one ought to be wary of the like, and in which one should act as its protagonist did. Sulaymān b. al-Ḥasan b. Mukhallad was connected with Ibn al-Furāt, and between them there was affection and friendship. The vizier found the documents of allegiance to Ibn al-Muʿtazz in Sulaymān's handwriting, because of a connection that existed with Muḥammad b. Dāwūd b. al-Jarrāḥ and a kinship between them. He did not reveal them to al-Muqtadir, but concealed them from him. Ibn al-Furāt treated Sulaymān kindly and entrusted him with administrative duties. Then Sulaymān worked against Ibn al-Furāt with al-Muqtadir, and wrote in his own hand a report containing mention of the vizier's properties, estates, revenues, and what pertained to his affairs. He took the note to deliver it to al-Muqtadir, but that did not come about for him. He attended the vizier's residence with it in his possession, and it fell from his sleeve. One of the secretaries got hold of it and brought it to the vizier. When he read it, he seized Sulaymān, placed him in a boat, brought him to Wāsiṭ, appointed guards over him there, and imposed a fine on him. Then he wished to pardon him, so he wrote to him: "I have considered—may God honor you—your claim upon me and your offense against me. I saw that the claim surpasses the offense. I remembered your past service, which inclined me toward you, turned me back to you, and restored me for you to the best of what I have known and the finest of what I have been accustomed to." He granted him ten thousand dirhams, pardoned him, employed him, and honored him.
