✧ Those of the notables who died in the year two hundred and ninety-three: Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Nāshiʾ the poet. Among the eminent who died in it: Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Nāshiʾ the poet. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Muʿtazilī, originally from al-Anbār. He resided in Baghdad for a time, then moved to Egypt where he died. He used to contend with poets and refute the logicians and prosodists. He was an accomplished poet, except that he had some folly. He has an excellent poem on the lineage of the Messenger of God ﷺ, which we have mentioned in the "Sīrah." Al-Qāḍī Ibn Khallikān said: He was deeply versed in several sciences, among them logic. He was intelligent and astute. He has a poem on various branches of knowledge with a single rhyme, reaching four thousand verses, and he has several fine works and many poems. From Muḥammad b. Khalaf b. al-Marzubān, who said: Aḥmad b. Abī Ṭāhir, al-Nāshiʾ [b. Muḥammad], and another gathered at my place, and I called for a singing-girl for them. Al-Nāshiʾ took a slip of paper and wrote on it: May I ransom you; if they had been just to you, they would have turned the glances away from your eyes. You turn our eyes away from anyone but you; can the eye look at anything but you? They made you a watcher over us, so who can be a watcher over you? [Did they not read, woe to them, what they see of the revelation of your beauty in your cheeks?] He said: We were enchanted by the verses. Ibn Abī Ṭāhir said: You have done well, by God, and excelled. By God, I have envied you these verses. By God, you shall not sit. And he rose and left. ʿUbayd b. Muḥammad b.
