Translation

✧ Mention of several events In the year two hundred and ninety-three, in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir, a commander of the followers of Ṭāhir b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. al-Layth came to Baghdād seeking protection, known as Abū Qābūs. The reason for that was that Ṭāhir busied himself with amusement and hunting, and went to Sijistān for hunting and pleasure. Power over the affairs in Fārs was seized by al-Layth b. ʿAlī b. al-Layth and Subkarī, a client of ʿAmr b. al-Layth. Estrangement occurred between them and this commander, so he left them and reached Baghdād. The caliph bestowed a robe of honor upon him and treated him kindly. Then Ṭāhir b. Muḥammad wrote asking for the return of Abū Qābūs, mentioning that he had collected money and taken it, and saying to him: Either return him to him, or reckon for him what went with him of the money as part of the settlement owed by him. But the caliph did not grant him that. In it, the Byzantines raided Qūrus, in the dependencies of Aleppo. Its people fought them fiercely, then they were defeated, and they killed most of them and killed the chiefs of Banū Tamīm. The Byzantines entered Qūrus, burned its mosque, and drove off those of its people who remained. In it, Ismāʿīl b. Aḥmad al-Sāmānī, king of Transoxiana, conquered places in the lands of the Turks and in the lands of the Daylamites. The people were led in the pilgrimage by al-Faḍl b. ʿAbd al-Malik al-Hāshimī. A gauge was set up on the Tigris on both its banks, its length twenty-five cubits, on every cubit a round mark, and on every five cubits a square mark, on which was written with an iron instrument the mark of the cubits by which the extents of the increases are known. Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar undertook the tax-farming of Bādūrayā for ten thousand kurrs of wheat and barley, half and half, and for one million six hundred thousand dirhams.
