The conquest of Syria and Egypt by al-Muktafi and the end of the Tulunid dynasty
ذِكْرُ عِدَّةِ حَوَادِثَ وَفِي سَنَةُ اثْنَتَيْنِ وَتِسْعِينَ وَمِائَتَيْنِ أُخِذَ بِالْبَصْرَةِ رَجُلٌ ذَكَرُوا أَنَّهُ أَرَادَ الْخُرُوجَ، وَأُخِذَ مَعَهُ وَلَدُهُ وَتِسْعَةٌ وَثَلَاثُونَ رَجُلًا، وَحُمِلُوا إِلَى بَغْدَادَ، فَكَانُوا يَبْكُونَ، وَيَسْتَغِيثُونَ، وَيَحْلِفُونَ أَنَّهُمْ بُرَآءٌ، فَأَمَرَ بِهِمُ الْمُكْتَفِي فَحُبِسُوا. وَفِيهَا أَغَارَ أَنْدُرُونِقْسُ الرُّومِيُّ عَلَى مَرْعَشَ وَنَوَاحِيهَا، فَنَفَّرَ أَهْلَ الْمِصِّيصَةِ وَأَهْلَ طَرَسُوسَ فَأُصِيبَ أَبُو الرِّجَالِ بْنُ أَبِي بَكَّارٍ فِي جَمَاعَةٍ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، فَعَزَلَ الْخَلِيفَةُ أَبَا الْعَشَائِرِ عَنِ الثُّغُورِ، وَاسْتَعْمَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ رُسْتُمَ بْنَ بَرَدُوَا. وَفِيهَا كَانَ الْفِدَاءُ عَلَى يَدِ رُسْتُمَ، فَكَانَ جُمْلَةُ مَنْ فُودِيَ بِهِ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ أَلْفَ نَفْسٍ ( وَمِائَتَيْ نَفْسٍ ). وَحَجَّ بِالنَّاسِ الْفَضْلُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ. وَفِيهَا زَادَتْ دِجْلَةُ زِيَادَةً مُفْرِطَةً، حَتَّى تَهَدَّمَتِ الدُّورُ الَّتِي عَلَى شَاطِئِهَا بِالْعِرَاقِ. وَفِيهَا فِي الْعِشْرِينَ مِنْ أَيَارَ، طَلَعَ كَوْكَبٌ لَهُ ذَنَبٌ عَظِيمٌ جِدًّا فِي بُرْجِ الْجَوْزَاءِ. وَفِيهَا وَقَعَ الْحَرِيقُ بِبَغْدَاذَ بِبَابِ الطَّاقِ مِنَ الْجَانِبِ الشَّرْقِيِّ إِلَى طُرُقِ الصَّفَّارِينَ، فَاحْتَرَقَ أَلْفُ دُكَّانٍ مَمْلُوءَةٍ مَتَاعًا لِلتُّجَّارِ.
Translation
✧ Mention of several events In the year two hundred and ninety-two, a man was seized in al-Baṣrah whom they mentioned had intended to revolt. His son and thirty-nine men were seized with him, and they were carried to Baghdad. They wept, cried for help, and swore that they were innocent. Al-Muktafī ordered them to be imprisoned. In it, Andronikos the Byzantine raided Marʿash and its environs. He put the people of al-Miṣṣīṣah and the people of Ṭarsūs to flight. Abū al-Rijāl b. Abī Bakkār was struck down among a group of Muslims. The caliph dismissed Abū al-ʿAshāʾir from the frontiers and appointed Rustum b. Baradū over them. In it, the ransom took place at the hand of Rustum. The total of those ransomed from the Muslims was one thousand two hundred souls. The people were led in the pilgrimage by al-Faḍl b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās b. Muḥammad. In it, the Tigris rose with an excessive rise, until the houses on its banks in Iraq collapsed. In it, on the twentieth of Ayyār, a comet with a very great tail appeared in the constellation of Gemini. In it, a fire broke out in Baghdad at Bāb al-Ṭāq on the eastern side, up to the streets of the coppersmiths. A thousand shops filled with merchants' goods burned.
