✧ Those of the notables who died in the year two hundred and ninety-two: Aḥmad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAbd al-Khāliq, Abū Bakr al-ʿAtakī, known as al-Bazzār: He was a ḥāfiẓ of ḥadīth, and he died at al-Ramlah in this year. Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muslim, Abū Muslim al-Baṣrī, known as al-Kajjī and al-Kashshī: He was born in the year two hundred, and he lived ninety-two years. He heard Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī, Abū ʿĀṣim al-Nabīl, al-Qaʿnabī, and others, and he transmitted ḥadīth. He was a learned, trustworthy man of great esteem, and he dictated to the people. In his assembly there were seven mustamlīs, each one conveying to the one next to him, and the people wrote from him standing with inkwells in their hands. Then the place was wiped, and those present with inkwells were counted, reaching more than forty thousand inkwells besides the onlookers. He had vowed to give ten thousand dirhams in charity when he related ḥadīth. From al-Fārūq b. ʿAbd al-Kabīr, who said: When we finished reading the Kitāb al-Sunan to Abū Muslim al-Kajjī, he prepared for us a banquet on which he spent a thousand dinars. And he said: Today I testified on behalf of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and my word alone was accepted; but if I testified about a basket of qull, I would need another witness to testify with me. Should I not do this in gratitude to God Almighty? It reached me from Ismāʿīl al-Qāḍī, who said: I heard one of our shaykhs say: Abū Muslim al-Kajjī, before he related ḥadīth, used to send dates from al-Baṣrah to Baghdad, and he had an agent here who sold them for him. When he began to relate ḥadīth, he sent to his agent: I have related ḥadīth and have been truthful in the ḥadīth of the Messenger of God ﷺ. Give in charity what you have of dates or their price if you have sold them, in gratitude to God Almighty for that. From Abū Muslim Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Baṣrī al-Kajjī, who said: I went out one day before dawn, and the moon deceived me. It was a cold day, and the bathhouse was already open, so I said: I will enter the bathhouse before going about my errand. I entered and said to the bath attendant: O bath attendant, has anyone entered your bathhouse? He said: No. I entered the bathhouse, and the moment I opened the door, a speaker said to me: Abū Muslim, submit and you will be safe. Then he began to recite: To You be praise, whether for a blessing or for a calamity averted; You will and You do what You will, And You hear where no hearing is. He said: I hurried out, trembling, and said to the bath attendant: Did you not claim that there was no one in the bathhouse? He said to me: Did you hear something? I told him what had happened, and he said: That is a jinnī who appears to us from time to time and recites poetry. I said: Do you have any of his poetry? He said: Yes, and he recited to me: O sinner, excessive in ignorance, how long will you persist and commit sin out of ignorance? How often do you anger the Majestic with ugly deeds, while He makes His work beautiful in deed? How can the eyelids of one rest who does not know whether the One on the Throne is pleased with him or not? From Ibn Rizq, who said: Ismāʿīl b. ʿAlī al-Khuṭabī informed us, saying: Abū Muslim Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Kajjī died on Sunday, seven days into Muḥarram, in the year two hundred and ninety-two, and he was taken down to al-Baṣrah and buried there. Idrīs b. ʿAbd al-Karīm, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ḥaddād, the Qurʾān reciter, companion of Khalaf b. Hishām: He was born in the year one hundred and ninety-nine, and he heard Aḥmad, Yaḥyā, and others. Abū Bakr al-Anbārī, al-Najjād, al-Khuṭabī, and Abū ʿAlī b. al-Waṣṣāf transmitted from him. Al-Dāraquṭnī was asked about him and said: Trustworthy, and a degree above trustworthy. From Ṭālib b. ʿUthmān, who said: I heard Ibn Miqsam say: I was with Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad b. Yaḥyā when Idrīs al-Ḥaddād came, and he honored him and conversed with him for a while. Idrīs had grown old, and he rose from his seat leaning on support. Abū al-ʿAbbās glanced at him and began to recite: I see my sight, every day and night, grows weary, and my gaze falls short of its range. Whoever keeps company with the days for ninety years, they change him, while time does not change. By my life, if I have begun to walk shackled, the time I walked unshackled was longer. Idrīs died on the Day of Sacrifice of this year. Al-Ḥasan b. Saʿīd b. Mihrān, Abū ʿAlī al-Ṣaffār the Qurʾān reciter: He was from the people of al-Mawṣil. He came to Baghdad and related ḥadīth there from Ghassān b. al-Rabīʿ, Muʿallā b. Mahdī, and others. Ibn Makhlad and Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī transmitted from him, and he was abstemious. He died in this year. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, Abū Khāzim: The Ḥanafī judge. His origin was from al-Baṣrah, and he settled in Baghdad. He related ḥadīth from Bundār, Muḥammad b. al-Muthannā, and others. He held the judgeship of Syria, al-Kūfah, and Baghdad. He was learned, pious, trustworthy, a model in the sciences, abundant in intellect and religion. From Abū al-Ḥusayn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Muḥammad al-Khaṣībī, who said: Ibn Ḥabīb al-Dhāriʿ said to me: When we were youths, we used to seat Abū Khāzim as a judge and bring disputes before him. He said: The days and nights did not pass until he became a judge. Abū al-Ḥusayn said: His severity in judgment reached the point that al-Muʿtaḍid sent Ṭarīf al-Makhalladī to him, and he said to him: I have a claim against al-Ḍayʿī concerning a sale, and al-Muʿtaḍid and others had money with him. It has reached me that his creditors have established their claims before you, and you have allotted them from his wealth. Make us like one of them. Abū Khāzim said to him: Tell him: The Commander of the Faithful—may God prolong his life—remembers what he said to me when he appointed me, that he had removed the matter from his own neck and placed it on mine, and it is not permissible for me to judge in favor of a claimant against a man's wealth except with clear proof. Ṭarīf returned to him and informed him, and he said: Tell him that so-and-so and so-and-so will testify—meaning two eminent men of that time. He said: They may testify before me, and I will inquire about them. If they are found upright, their testimony will be accepted; otherwise, I will enforce what has been established before me. Those men refrained from testifying out of fear, and al-Muʿtaḍid did not pay me anything. From Wakīʿ the judge, who said: I used to administer endowments for Abū Khāzim during the days of al-Muʿtaḍid, among them the endowments of al-Ḥasan b. Sahl. When al-Muʿtaḍid expanded the construction of the Ḥasanī palace, he incorporated into it some of the endowments of al-Ḥasan b. Sahl that were adjacent to the palace. The year came to an end, and I had collected its revenue except what al-Muʿtaḍid had taken. I came to Abū Khāzim and informed him of the collection of the year's revenue, and I asked his permission to distribute it in its proper channels. He said to me: Have you collected what is due from the Commander of the Faithful? I said to him: Who would dare demand from the caliph? He said: By God, I will not distribute the revenue until you take what is due from him. By God, if he does not remove the obstruction, I will not administer any work for him. Then he said: Go to him this very hour and demand it. I said: Who will grant me access? He said: Go to Ṣāfī al-Ḥaramī and tell him that you are my messenger, sent on an important matter, and tell him what I have told you. I went and told Ṣāfī that, and he granted me access. It was the end of the day. When I stood before the caliph, he thought that a great matter had occurred, and he said: Come, speak, as if eager. I said to him: I administer for ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, the judge of the Commander of the Faithful, the endowments of al-Ḥasan b. Sahl. Among them is what the Commander of the Faithful has incorporated into his palace. When I collected the revenue of this year, he refused to distribute it unless I brought what is due from the Commander of the Faithful. He sent me this hour for this reason, and he ordered me to say that I came on an important matter so that I might gain access. He said: I fell silent for a while, thinking, then he said: ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd is right. O Ṣāfī, bring the chest. He brought a small chest and said: How much is due to you? I said: What I collected last year from the revenue of these properties was four hundred dinars. He said: How skilled are you in counting and weighing? I said: I know both. He said: Bring a scale. A scale was brought, and he took out dinars in cash from the chest and weighed for me four hundred dinars. I took them and returned to Abū Khāzim with the news. He said: Add them to what has been collected of the endowment's funds with you, and distribute it tomorrow in its proper channels, and do not delay it. I did so, and the people's gratitude to Abū Khāzim increased because of this and his boldness before the caliph in such a matter, as did their gratitude to al-Muʿtaḍid for his fairness. From the judge Abū Ṭāhir Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Naṣr, who said: It reached me that Abū Khāzim the judge sat in al-Sharqiyyah, while he was its judge, to adjudicate. Two litigants came before him, and one of them, in his presence, dared to do something that warranted discipline. He ordered him to be disciplined, and he was disciplined and died on the spot. He wrote to al-Muʿtaḍid from the assembly: I inform the Commander of the Faithful—may God prolong his life—that two litigants came before me, and one of them dared to do something for which discipline was due before me. I ordered him to be disciplined, and he was disciplined and died. If the purpose of disciplining him was the welfare of the Muslims, and he died during the discipline, then his blood money is obligatory from the treasury of the Muslims. If the Commander of the Faithful—may God prolong his life—sees fit to order the blood money to be sent so that I may convey it to his heirs, let him do so. The reply came back to him: We have ordered the blood money to be sent to you, and ten thousand dirhams were sent to him. He summoned the heirs of the deceased and gave it to them. From Aḥmad b. ʿAlī, who said: Al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī al-Ṣaymarī mentioned to me, saying: ʿUbayd Allāh b. Sulaymān had written to Abū Khāzim concerning the sale of an estate belonging to an orphan that adjoined some of his own estates. He wrote to him: If the vizier—may God honor him—sees fit to make me one of two men: either a man by whom judgment is protected, or a man from whom judgment is protected. From Abū Khāzim the judge, who said: I had in my care orphans, male and female, left behind by one of the governors, and I had returned their trust to some of the witnesses. The trustee came to me one day and informed me that the administrator of properties in Baghdad who oversees the sultan's properties and the administrator of Bādūrayā had laid their hands on the orphans' properties, claiming that the vizier ʿUbayd Allāh b. Sulaymān had ordered them to do so by command of the Commander of the Faithful al-Muʿtaḍid. I went to al-Muʿtaḍid on a day of audience. When the audience ended, I approached him and explained the situation. He said to me: O ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, this is a governor who betrayed me concerning my wealth and appropriated it. I have a large sum due from him from districts he administered from my private estates, and what I have against him is twice these properties he left. I said: O Commander of the Faithful, what you claim against him requires proof. It has been established before me that these properties were his on the day he died, and there is no way to seize them from the hand of his heir except with clear proof. This is God's ruling for adults, so how much more for children? He said: He fell silent for a while, looking down, then he called for an inkwell and wrote in his own hand to ʿUbayd Allāh b. Sulaymān ordering the release of the estates. From al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAyyāsh the judge, from someone who told him that he was riding alongside Abū Khāzim the judge on a road when a man passed by him and said: May God reward you well, O judge, for appointing so-and-so to the judgeship of our town, for he is upright. Abū Khāzim shouted at him and said: Be silent, may God keep you well! You say of a judge that he is upright? That is among the attributes of the police; judges are above that. He said: Then we rode on while he was silent for a while. I said: What is the matter, O judge? He said: I never thought I would live to hear this. But the age has become corrupt, and this craft has become void. By my life, those have entered it with whom the virtuous man needs praise. People did not need to say: So-and-so the judge is upright, until so-and-so was appointed—and he mentioned a man, and said: I do not like to name him. I said: Who is this man? He refused, but I insisted, and he gestured toward Abū ʿUmar. Abū Khāzim died in this year, and some scholars of transmission mentioned that he was buried in al-Kūfah. Al-Faḍl b. Muḥammad, Abū Barzah al-Ḥāsib: He related ḥadīth from Yaḥyā al-Ḥimmānī. ʿAbd al-Bāqī b. Qāniʿ transmitted from him, and he was trustworthy and of great esteem. He died in Ṣafar of this year.
