Translation

✧ Mention of several events In the year two hundred and ninety-one, reports came that a flood struck Ḥawā and its environs, submerging about thirty farsakhs. Many people drowned, along with livestock and crops, villages were ruined, and one thousand two hundred persons were brought out from the drowned, apart from those who were not recovered. In this year al-Muktafī bestowed robes of honor upon Muḥammad b. Sulaymān, the secretary of the army, and upon a group of commanders, and ordered them to march to Syria and Egypt to seize the provinces from Hārūn b. Khumārawayh, because of the weakness he had shown and the loss of his men in killing the Qarmaṭī. So he departed from Baghdad in Rajab with ten thousand men and hastened on his way. In this year the Turks came out in a countless multitude into the land beyond the river. In their army there were seven hundred Turkish tents, which are only for their chiefs. Ismāʿīl b. Aḥmad sent against them a large army, and a great host of volunteers followed them. They marched toward the Turks and reached them while they were heedless. The Muslims fell upon them at dawn, killing a great number of them that could not be counted, and the rest fled. Their camp was plundered, and the Muslims returned safe and laden with booty. In this year ten crosses came out from the Byzantines, with each cross ten thousand men, toward the frontiers. A group of them headed for al-Ḥadath, raiding, taking captives, and burning. In this year the one known as Ghulām Zarāfa marched from Ṭarsūs toward the land of the Byzantines. He conquered the city of Anṭāliya, which rivals Constantinople. He took it by the sword by force, killing five thousand men and capturing the like number, and rescued five thousand prisoners. He seized sixty ships from them and loaded them with the wealth, goods, and slaves he had gained as booty. The share of each man was estimated at one thousand dinars. This city is on the seacoast, and the Muslims rejoiced at this. Al-Faḍl b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-ʿAbbās led the people in the pilgrimage.
