Yasār, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Shaybānī, their client, known as Thaʿlab: Imam of the Kufans in grammar and lexicography. He was born in the year 200. He heard Ibrāhīm b. al-Mundhir, Muḥammad b. He was trustworthy, an authority, devout, righteous, and renowned for truthfulness and memorization. He used to say: I sought Arabic grammar and lexicography in the year 216, and I began by examining the books of al-Farrāʾ when I was eighteen years old. By the time I reached twenty-five, there did not remain for me any question of al-Farrāʾ or anything from his books except that I had memorized it, and I heard from al-Qawārīrī one hundred thousand hadiths. [Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muḥammad al-Zuhrī said: Between me and Abū al-ʿAbbās there was affection and rivalry, and I used to consult him in my affairs. One day I came to him to consult him about moving from one quarter to another because of harm from neighbors. He said: Abū Muḥammad, the Arabs say: Your patience with the harm of one you know is better for you than introducing someone you do not know.] From Abū ʿUmar al-Zāhid, who said: I was in the gathering of Abū al-ʿAbbās Thaʿlab when a questioner asked him about something, and he said: I do not know. The man said to him: You say “I do not know,” while to you the livers of camels are driven, and to you the journey is made from every land? Thaʿlab said to him: If your mother had as many camel droppings as the number of times I say “I do not know,” she would be rich. From Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn b. Muḥammad b. Sulaymān al-Kātib, who said: Isḥāq b. Aḥmad al-Kādhī recited to us, saying: Thaʿlab recited to us: I have reached eighty of my years, and I never hoped for fifty, so praise be to God and thanks to Him since He added to my age thirty. And I ask God for attainment of His good pleasure, amen, amen. Thaʿlab died on Saturday, thirteen nights remaining of Jumādā al-Ūlā in the year 291, and was buried in the cemetery of Bāb al-Shām, and his grave is visible. He fell ill in Ramaḍān of this year, and ordered the release of tax collectors from prisons, and to stand surety for those against whom there were monetary claims, and to release those in prison among the Alids who had been unjustly seized because of the Qarmaṭī who appeared in Syria. His illness increased, so he appointed as his successor his nephew Abū Aḥmad ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿUbayd Allāh. He came to present him to al-Muktafī. When he left his presence, al-Muktafī recited: And when his heart refused anything but wilfulness, and he did not ask about Laylā with wealth or family, he consoled himself with another besides her, and behold the one with whom he consoled himself incites him to Laylā and does not console. He chose al-ʿAbbās as secretary, and they went out with the reply to him, and he died at that hour. Abū Bakr al-Ṣūlī said: Among the wonders I witnessed is that we used to go early every day to visit al-Qāsim b. ʿUbayd Allāh. We entered on the Wednesday on which he died into his house, and we saw his two sons, Abū ʿAlī and Abū Jaʿfar, had come out. When he entered upon him, he began to recite: I pardoned against my will from you a pardon of necessity, [to you, while in my heart there are wounds from reproach.] Ismāʿīl answered him [saying]: And longing for you never ceased to be intense, humbling from me every obstinate, difficult thing. Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Abū ʿAbd Allāh [al-ʿAbdī] al-Būshanjī Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Abū ʿAbd Allāh [al-ʿAbdī] al-Būshanjī: Shaykh of the people of hadith in his time. He died on the first of Muḥarram of this year, and was buried in Naysābūr. Muḥammad b. Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl b. Shaddād, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī, the judge known as al-Judhūʿī [Muḥammad b. Muḥammad] b. Ismāʿīl b. Shaddād, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī, the judge known as al-Judhūʿī: He narrated from Musaddad b. Musarhad, ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī, Ibn Numayr, and others. [And] from him narrated [Abū ʿAmr] b. al-Sammāk and others, and he was trustworthy. From ʿAlī b. al-Muḥsin al-Qāḍī], who said: My father informed me, saying: Abū al-Ḥusayn Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Khallāl al-Baṣrī said: My father narrated to me, and I heard it from other than him: that the judges and witnesses in the City of Peace brought in al-Muʿtamid [ʿalā Allāh] to testify against him concerning a debt he owed, which he had borrowed when he was in need, to spend on the leader of the Zanj. When they stood before him, Ismāʿīl b. Bulbul the secretary read to them, then said: The Commander of the Faithful, may God prolong his life, commands you to testify against him to what is in this document. The people testified until the document reached al-Judhūʿī the judge. He took it in his hand, stepped forward to the throne, and said: O Commander of the Faithful, shall I testify against you to what is in this document? He said: Testify. He said: It is not permissible for me to testify unless you say: Yes, testify against me. He said: Yes, so he testified in the document, then left. Al-Muʿtamid said: Who is this? It was said to him: Al-Judhūʿī al-Baṣrī. He said: What office does he hold? They said: He holds nothing. He said: Someone like this should not be left without appointment, so they appointed him [to Wāsiṭ, so Ismāʿīl appointed him and he went down]. One day al-Muwaffaq needed to consult the judge about matters in which one consults. He said: Summon the judge. He came, and he was short and had a long woolen cap. He entered one of the passageways, and with him was a servant of his. A servant of al-Muwaffaq met him, who was very advanced in his favor [and was intoxicated]. He encountered him in an empty part of the passage, put his hand on his cap until his head sank into it, then left him and went on. Al-Judhūʿī sat in his place, and his servant came and ripped the cap and took his head out of it. He folded his cloak over his head and returned to his house. He summoned the witnesses and ordered them to hand over the registry office, while al-Muwaffaq's messengers came and went, and the matter was concealed from him until one of the witnesses mentioned the news to one of the messengers. He returned to al-Muwaffaq and informed him of that. He summoned the chief of police and ordered him to strip the servant and carry him to the gate of the judge's house and flog him there with a thousand lashes. The father of this servant was one of the leading commanders, and his position was such that if he had intended rebellion, most of the army would have obeyed him, but he said nothing. The commanders dismounted and went to him, saying: Command us with your command. He said: The commander al-Muwaffaq is more compassionate toward him than I am. The commanders went with the servant to the gate of al-Judhūʿī's house. They entered and pleaded with him. He brought in the chief of police and the servant, and said [to him]: Do not flog him. He said: I will not dare to oppose al-Muwaffaq. He said: Then I will ride to him and remove that from him. So he rode and interceded for him, and he pardoned him. Al-Judhūʿī died on Saturday, six nights having passed of Jumādā al-Ākhira of this year, in Baghdad.
