Translation

✧ In the year two hundred and eighty-eight, a plague occurred in Adharbayjān, from which many people died, until people lacked what to shroud the dead with, and they would leave them on the roads unshrouded and unburied. In it, Muḥammad b. Abī al-Sāj died in Adharbayjān during the aforementioned great plague. His companions gathered and appointed his son Duyūdād, while his uncle Yūsuf b. Abī al-Sāj withdrew from them in opposition. A small number gathered to him, and he fell upon his nephew Duyūdād while he was in his father's camp and routed him. Yūsuf offered him to remain with him, but he refused and took the road to al-Mawṣil toward Baghdādh, and that was in Ramaḍān. In it, in Ṣafar, Ṭāhir b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. al-Layth entered the land of Fāris with his army, and they expelled the caliph's governor from it. The Amīr Ismāʿīl b. Aḥmad al-Sāmānī wrote to Ṭāhir, reminding him that the caliph al-Muʿtaḍid had appointed him over Sijistān and that he was proceeding there, so Ṭāhir returned because of that. In it, al-Muʿtaḍid appointed his mawlā Badr over Fāris and ordered him to march there when news reached him that Ṭāhir had seized it. He marched to it with a great army in Jumādā al-Ākhirah. When he drew near Fāris, those of Ṭāhir's companions who were in it withdrew from it, and Badr entered it, collected its kharāj, and Ṭāhir returned to Sijistān, as we mentioned regarding Ismāʿīl al-Sāmānī's correspondence to him that he intended to head for Sijistān. In it, one of the ʿAlawīs seized control of Ṣanʿāʾ. The Banū Yaʿfur marched against him in a great host and fought him, routing him. He escaped fleeing with about fifty horsemen, and they captured a son of his. The Banū Yaʿfur entered it and gave the khuṭbah in it for al-Muʿtaḍid. In it, al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī Kūrah dispatched his companion Nizār b. Muḥammad to the summer expedition against the Byzantines. He raided and conquered many Byzantine fortresses, and returned with captives. In it, the companions of Abū Saʿīd al-Jannābī drew near al-Baṣrah, and its people feared and resolved to flee from it, but their governor prevented them from that. In it, in Dhū al-Ḥijjah, Waṣīf, the servant of Ibn Abī al-Sāj, was killed and his corpse was crucified in Baghdādh. It is also said that he died and was not killed. In this year, Hārūn b. Muḥammad, whose kunyah was Abū Bakr, led the people in the ḥajj. Among the events of this year was that the Byzantines raided the land of al-Raqqah in hosts from sea and land, killing many people and capturing about fifteen thousand children. Among them was that the land of Ardabīl was struck by a severe wind from after ʿaṣr until a third of the night, then they were struck by a severe earthquake that continued for days. Houses and dwellings collapsed, and others among them were swallowed up. The total number who died under the rubble was one hundred and fifty thousand. To Allāh we belong and to Him is our return. In the year 288: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Shīʿī appeared in the Maghrib and called the tribe of Kinānah to the Imām al-Mahdī, and they responded. This is the first appearance of the ʿUbaydīs who became kings of the land of Miṣr.
