✧ The victory over Hārūn the Khārijite In the year two hundred and eighty-three, al-Muʿtaḍid marched to al-Mawṣil on account of Hārūn al-Shārī and gained victory over him. The cause of the victory over him was that he arrived at Tikrīt and stayed there. He summoned al-Ḥusayn b. Ḥamdān al-Taghlibī and sent him in pursuit of Hārūn b. ʿAbd Allāh the Khārijite with a group of horsemen and foot soldiers. Al-Ḥusayn said to him: "If I bring him, I shall have three requests from the Commander of the Faithful." He said: "Mention them." He said: "One of them is the release of my father, and two requests I will mention after I bring him." Al-Muʿtaḍid said to him: "You shall have that." He selected three hundred horsemen and set out with them, and with them was Waṣīf b. Mūshkīr. Al-Ḥusayn said to him: "Command him to obey me, O Commander of the Faithful." So he commanded him to do that. Al-Ḥusayn set out with them until he reached a ford in the Tigris. Al-Ḥusayn said to Waṣīf and those with him: "Let them halt there, for he has no route if he flees other than this. Do not leave this place until he passes by you and you prevent him from crossing, and I will come, or news reaches you that I have been killed." Ḥusayn went on in pursuit of Hārūn. He met him and engaged him, and there were killed between them some men. Hārūn was routed, and Waṣīf remained at the ford for three days. His companions said to him: "Our stay has been long, and we do not feel safe that Ḥusayn may seize al-Shārī, so that the victory would be his and not ours. The right course is that we go after their traces." He obeyed them and went. Hārūn came routed to the place of the ford and crossed. Ḥusayn came in his track and did not see Waṣīf and his companions in the place where he had left them, nor did he learn any news of them. So he crossed in pursuit of Hārūn and came to an encampment of the Arab encampments and asked about him. They concealed it, so he threatened them, and they informed him that he had passed by them. He followed him until he caught up with him after some days, while Hārūn was among about a hundred men. Al-Shārī pleaded with him and made him promises, but Ḥusayn refused anything but fighting him. So he fought him, and Ḥusayn threw himself upon him and took him captive, and brought him to al-Muʿtaḍid. Al-Muʿtaḍid returned to Baghdad, and he arrived there with eight nights remaining of Rabīʿ al-Awwal. Al-Muʿtaḍid bestowed a robe of honour on al-Ḥusayn b. Ḥamdān and placed a collar on him, and bestowed robes of honour on his brothers, and Hārūn was made to enter on an elephant. When they mounted Hārūn on the elephant, they wanted to dress him in a notorious brocade, but he refused and said: "This is not lawful." So they dressed him against his will. When he was crucified, he called out at the top of his voice: "Judgment belongs only to God, even if the polytheists hate it." Hārūn was a Ṣufrī. Al-Ḥusayn b. Ḥamdūn had fought the Khawārij in this expedition fiercely alongside the caliph. The caliph released his father Ḥamdān b. Ḥamdūn from fetters after he had imprisoned him when he took the fortress of Mārdīn from his hand and demolished it upon him. So he released him, bestowed a robe of honour upon him, and treated him well.
