✧ Those of the notables who died in the year two hundred eighty-two AH Aḥmad b. Dāwūd b. Mūsā, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Sadūsī, a Baṣran, known as al-Makkī. He was trustworthy (thiqah). He resided in Miṣr and died there in Ṣafar of this year. Ismāʿīl b. Isḥāq b. Ismāʿīl b. Ḥammād b. Zayd b. Dirham, Abū Isḥāq al-Azdī, client of Jarīr b. Ḥāzim, from the people of al-Baṣrah. He was born in the year one hundred ninety-nine, and it is said: in the year two hundred, and he grew up in al-Baṣrah, and his life extended, so many sciences were transmitted from him. He heard Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī, Muslim b. Ibrāhīm al-Farāhīdī, al-Qaʿnabī, Ibn al-Madīnī, and others. Al-Baghawī, Ibn Ṣāʿid, Ibn al-Anbārī, and others narrated from him. He was virtuous, meticulous, a jurist upon the school of Mālik. He expounded his school, summarized it, argued for it, and compiled al-Musnad and several books on the sciences of the Qurʾān. He collected the ḥadīth of Mālik, Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd al-Anṣārī, and Ayyūb al-Sikhtiyānī. He assumed the judiciary during the caliphate of al-Mutawakkil when Sawwār b. ʿAbd Allāh died. At that time the chief judge in Surra man raʾā was Abū Jaʿfar b. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid al-Hāshimī. Al-Mutawakkil ordered him to appoint Ismāʿīl as judge of the eastern side of Baghdad, so he appointed him in the year two hundred forty-six. Seventeen years after that, he combined for him the judgeship of both sides. He remained judge over ʿAskar al-Muhtadī until the year two hundred fifty-five, when al-Muhtadī seized Ḥammād b. Isḥāq, the brother of Ismāʿīl, and had him flogged with whips and paraded around on a mule in Surra man raʾā, for something that had reached him about him. He dismissed Ismāʿīl b. Isḥāq from judging, and he went into hiding. At that time the chief judge in Surra man raʾā was al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Abī al-Shawārib. Then he was dismissed from the judiciary in this year, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Nāʾil b. Najīḥ was appointed judge. Then al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad was restored to the judiciary in this year. Then al-Muhtadī appointed al-Qāsim b. Manṣūr al-Tamīmī as judge over the eastern side for about seven months. Then al-Muhtadī was killed, and al-Muʿtamid restored Ismāʿīl b. Isḥāq to the eastern side of Baghdad in the year two hundred fifty-six. He remained there until the year two hundred fifty-eight. Then he asked al-Muwaffaq to transfer him to the western side. At that time, the judge of the western side, in al-Sharqiyyah, which is al-Karkh, was al-Birtī, and over the city of al-Manṣūr was Aḥmad b. Yaḥyā. Al-Muwaffaq granted his request, but the chief judge Ibn Abī al-Shawārib disliked that and strove to reverse it, but he could not, because of Ismāʿīl's firm standing with al-Muwaffaq billāh. So Ismāʿīl's request was granted, and al-Birtī was transferred to the judgeship of al-Sharqiyyah on the eastern side, while Ismāʿīl remained over the entire western side until the year two hundred sixty-two. Then the whole of Baghdad was combined for Ismāʿīl b. Isḥāq, and al-Birtī was dismissed and given al-Madāʾin, al-Nahrawānāt, and a portion of the districts of al-Sawād. Ibn Abī al-Shawārib had died in the year two hundred sixty-one, so his brother ʿAlī b. Muḥammad took his place and was called the chief judge. Ismāʿīl, whose mention has preceded, became preeminent over the rest of the judges, but he was not given the post of chief judge until he died. From Muḥammad b. al-Faḍl al-Naḥwī, who said: I heard Abū al-Ṭayyib ʿAbd Allāh b. Shādhān say: I heard Yūsuf b. Yaʿqūb say: I read the written instruction of al-Muʿtaḍid to ʿUbayd Allāh b. Sulaymān b. Wahb the vizier: "Take good care of the two good, virtuous elders Ismāʿīl b. Isḥāq al-Azdī and Mūsā b. Isḥāq al-Khaṭmī, for they are among those by whose supplications God wards off evil from the people of the earth when He wills it." From al-Ḥusayn b. al-Qāsim al-Kawkabī, who said: I heard Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Mubarrad say: When the mother of Ismāʿīl b. Isḥāq the judge died, I rode to him to console him and express my grief for him. I found with him prominent men of Banū Hāshim, jurists, upright witnesses, and respectable people of Madīnat al-Salām. I saw from his bereavement what he displayed and could not conceal, while everyone was consoling him and he was nearly inconsolable. When I saw that from him, after greeting I began and recited to him: By my life, if the vicissitudes of time have taken from us, it has taken a beloved soul; but my knowledge of the reward at the time of calamity makes one forget the calamity. He understood my words and admired them, and called for an inkwell and wrote them down. I saw him afterward, his face had relaxed, and the gloom and intense grief that had been upon him had left him. Ismāʿīl died on Wednesday night, eight nights remaining in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year, at the time of the last evening prayer, suddenly. Ismāʿīl b. Muḥammad b. Abī Kathīr, Abū Yaʿqūb al-Fārisī al-Fasawī. He resided in Baghdad and narrated there from Qutaybah, Ibn Rāhwayh, and others. Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī narrated from him. He was trustworthy and truthful. He was judge of al-Madāʾin. He died in Shaʿbān of this year. Badr b. al-Mundhir b. Badr, Abū Bakr al-Maghāzilī, whose name was Aḥmad, but he was nicknamed Badr and it prevailed over him. Al-Najjād and others narrated from him. He was trustworthy and counted among the saints. He was forbearing. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal used to honor him and say: "Who is like Badr? Badr has mastered his tongue!" Badr died in Jumādā al-Ūlā of this year on the western side. From Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Sulamī, who said: Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥarbī said: I was with Badr al-Maghāzilī, and his wife had sold a house of hers for thirty dinars. Badr said to her: "Let us distribute these dinars among our brethren, and we will eat our daily provision day by day." She answered him: "You renounce the world, and we desire it? This will not be!" Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. Abī ʿUthmān, Abū al-Faḍl al-Ṭayālisī. He heard from ʿAffān, ʿĀrim, Musaddad, Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn, and others. Ibn Ṣāʿid, Ibn Makhlad, and al-Najjād narrated from him. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Abū ʿAlī al-Khayyāṭ. A companion of Bishr al-Ḥāfī. People wrote down from him some anecdotes and some portions of ḥadīth. He died in Shawwāl of this year. Al-Ḥārith b. Muḥammad b. Abī Usāmah, Abū Muḥammad al-Tamīmī. He was born in Shawwāl of the year one hundred eighty-six, and he heard ʿAlī b. ʿĀṣim, Yazīd b. Hārūn, Rawḥ b. ʿUbādah, and ʿAffān b. Muslim. Abū Bakr b. Abī al-Dunyā, Ibn Jarīr, Ibn Makhlad, al-Najjād, Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī, and al-Khuldī narrated from him. He was truthful and trustworthy. He died on the Day of ʿArafah of this year, having reached ninety-six years. Khālid b. Yazīd b. Wahb b. Jarīr b. Ḥāzim, Abū al-Haytham al-Azdī. He narrated from his father. Muḥammad b. Khalaf b. al-Marzubān narrated from him. He used to live in the city of al-Manṣūr, then he went out to al-Baṣrah and died there in this year. Khumārawayh b. Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn. In Dhū al-Ḥijjah of the year two hundred eighty-two, and his age was thirty-two years. More than twenty servants from among his companions who were accused of killing him were killed. Al-Faḍl b. Muḥammad b. al-Musayyib b. Mūsā b. Zuhayr b. Yazīd b. Kaysān b. Bādhān – and he is the king of Yemen who embraced Islam by the letter of the Messenger of God ﷺ – Abū Muḥammad al-Shaʿrānī. He was a man of letters, a jurist, a devout worshipper, who traveled widely in pursuit of ḥadīth, intelligent and knowledgeable in the science of narrators. He heard in Miṣr, the Ḥijāz, Syria, al-Kūfah, al-Baṣrah, Wāsiṭ, al-Jazīrah, and Khurāsān. He questioned Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn about narrators, and questioned ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī and Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal about hidden defects. He took Arabic language from Ibn al-Aʿrābī and recited the Qurʾān to Khalaf b. Hishām. He was trustworthy and truthful. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Ḥumayd b. Nuʿaym b. Shammās. Of Marwazī origin. He heard ʿAffān b. Muslim, Sulaymān b. Ḥarb, ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. Ḥassān, and others. Al-Khaṭīb said: He was trustworthy. Al-Dāraquṭnī mentioned him and said: There is no harm in him. He died in this year. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muḥammad b. ʿImārah b. al-Qaʿqāʿ, Abū Qabīṣah al-Ḍabbī. Ibn al-Sammāk and Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī narrated from him. He was trustworthy. Al-Dāraquṭnī mentioned him and said: There is no harm in him. From Ismāʿīl b. ʿAlī, who said: Abū Qabīṣah said to us: "I married the mother of these children of mine. A few days after the marriage contract, I went to them to greet them. I looked through a crack in the door and saw her, and I disliked her. She has been with me for sixty years." Ismāʿīl said: "This shaykh was one of the most assiduous in reciting the Qurʾān among those we have seen. I asked him about the most he recited in one of the long days of summer – and he was described as reciting much and quickly – but he refused to tell me. I persisted until he said that in one of the long days of summer he recited four complete recitations, and in the fifth he reached Sūrat Barāʾah when the muezzin called the afternoon prayer. He was among the truthful." He died in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year. Muḥammad b. al-Qāsim b. Khallād b. Yāsir b. Sulaymān, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḍarīr, client of Abū Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr, so his clientage belongs to him, known as Abū al-ʿAynāʾ. The reason for that is that he said to Abū Zayd: "How do you form the diminutive of ʿayn?" He replied: "ʿUyaynā, O Abū al-ʿAynāʾ." He was born in al-Ahwāz at the beginning of the year one hundred ninety-one and grew up in al-Baṣrah. He heard from Abū ʿĀṣim al-Nabīl, Abū ʿUbaydah, al-Aṣmaʿī, and Abū Zayd. He became blind after forty years. He was among the most eloquent, best memorizers, and quickest in repartee of the people. His chains of transmission are few, and anecdotes predominate in his transmission. From Abū al-ʿAynāʾ Muḥammad b. al-Qāsim, who said: I went to ʿAbd Allāh b. Dāwūd al-Khuraybī, and he said: "What brings you?" I said: "Ḥadīth." He said: "Go and memorize the Qurʾān." I said: "I have already memorized the Qurʾān." He said: "Recite: 'And recite to them the news of Noah.'" So I recited the tenth of the Qurʾān to him until I finished it. He said: "Go now and learn the laws of inheritance." I said: "I have already learned the grandfather, the direct male line, and the seniority." He said: "Which is closer to you, your brother's son or your paternal uncle's son?" I said: "My brother's son." He said: "Why?" I said: "Because my brother is from my father, and my paternal uncle's son is from my grandfather." He said: "Go now and learn Arabic." I said: "I learned it before these two." He said: "Why did ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, when he was stabbed, say: 'Yā la-llāhi yā lā li-l-muslimīn'? Why did he open that one and break this one?" I said: "He opened that lām for supplication, and he broke this one for supplication, seeking help, and seeking victory." He said: "If I were to narrate to anyone, I would narrate to you!" From Abū al-ʿAynāʾ, who said: Al-Mutawakkil said to me: "I have chosen you for my companionship." I said: "I cannot bear that, and I do not say that out of ignorance of the honor in this assembly for me, but I am a blind man, and a blind man's gestures are inconsistent, and subtle signals are hidden from him. It is possible that you speak with the words of an angry man while your face is pleased, or with the words of a pleased man while your face is angry. If I cannot distinguish these two, I perish." He said: "You have spoken truly, but keep close to us." I said: "The close attendance of an obligatory duty." Then he gave me ten thousand dirhams. He said: It is also related that al-Mutawakkil said: "I would like to make Abū al-ʿAynāʾ my boon companion, were he not blind." Abū al-ʿAynāʾ said: "If the Commander of the Faithful exempts me from sighting the new moons and engraving signet rings, I am suitable." From Muḥammad b. al-Qāsim b. Khallād, Abū al-ʿAynāʾ, who said: Al-Manṣūr summoned my grandfather Khallād, who was his client, and said to him: "I want you for a matter that has concerned me, and I have chosen you for it, and you are in my esteem, as Abū Dhuʾayb al-Hudhalī said: Send me as a messenger to her, and the best messenger is the one among them most knowledgeable of the aspects of the news. He said to him: "I hope to attain the satisfaction of the Commander of the Faithful." He said: "Go to al-Madīnah pretending to be one of the followers of ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥasan, and spend money on him, and write to me about his breaths and the news of his children, and I will satisfy him." Then ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥasan learned that he was betrayed by him. He said: "So he cursed him and his offspring with blindness." He said: "And we have been inheriting that until this very hour." And it was narrated to me that Abū al-ʿAynāʾ’s stipend was delayed, so he complained to ʿUbayd Allāh b. Sulaymān. He said: “Did we not write for you to Ibn al-Mudabbir? What did he do regarding your matter?” He replied: “He dragged me over the thorns of delay and deprived me of the fruit of the promise!” So he said: “You chose him!” He said: “What blame is on me? Moses chose seventy men from his people, and there was not among them a rightly guided man, so the earthquake seized them; and the Prophet ﷺ chose Ibn Abī Sarḥ as a scribe, and he joined the disbelievers as an apostate; and ʿAlī chose Abū Mūsā, and he ruled against him.” The compiler said: Abū al-ʿAynāʾ left al-Baṣrah and came to Baghdad. The reason for his leaving al-Baṣrah was what Abū Manṣūr al-Qazzāz informed us, with his chain of transmission from Abū al-ʿAynāʾ, who said: The reason for my leaving al-Baṣrah and moving away from it was that one day I passed by the slave-dealers’ market and saw a slave being auctioned. He had reached thirty dinars while he was worth three hundred dinars, so I bought him. I was building a house, so I gave him twenty dinars to spend on the workmen. After a few days he came to me and said: “The money is spent!” I said: “Bring me your account.” He produced an account for ten dinars. I said: “Where is the rest?” He said: “I bought with it a plain garment and cut it.” I said: “Who ordered you to do this?” He said: “Do not be hasty, my master. The people of chivalry and high rank do not blame their slaves if they do something that brings adornment to their masters!” So I said to myself: “I have bought al-Aṣmaʿī without knowing it.” He said: There was a woman in my mind whom I wanted to marry secretly from my paternal cousin. One day I said to him: “Is there any good in you?” He said: “Yes, by my life!” So I informed him of the matter. He said: “What an excellent helper I am for you!” So I married the woman, gave him a dinar, and said to him: “Buy for us such-and-such, including hāzibī fish.” He went and returned having bought what I wanted, except that he bought māramāhī fish instead. That angered me. I said: “Did I not order you to buy hāzibī?” He said: “Yes, but I saw that Buqrāṭ says: hāzibī generates black bile, and he praises māramāhī and says it has less harm.” I said: “O son of a fornicator! I did not know I had bought Jālīnūs.” I got up and struck him ten lashes with a whip. When I finished beating him, he took hold of me and the whip, and struck me seven lashes, saying: “O my master, discipline is three, and seven is surplus, and that is retaliation. I struck you these seven lashes out of fear of the avenger on the Day of Resurrection.” That angered me greatly, so I threw something at him and wounded his head. He went immediately to my paternal cousin and said to her: “O my mistress, religion is sincere counsel. The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Whoever deceives us is not of us.’ I inform you that my master has married and asked me to keep it secret. When I said to him that I must inform my mistress of the news, he beat me with lashes and wounded me.” Then my paternal cousin prevented me from entering the house and came between me and what was in it. We fell into confusion, and I saw that the matter could only be set right by divorcing the woman I had married. Then my affair with my paternal cousin was set right, and I heard the sincere slave, but I could not bring myself to speak to him. I said: “I will free him and be at ease; perhaps he will go away from me.” When I freed him, he clung to me and said: “Now your right over me has become obligatory.” Then he wanted to perform the Hajj, so I equipped him and gave him provisions. He set out and was absent from me for twenty days, then returned. I said to him: “Why have you returned?” He said: “The road was cut off for me. I reflected, and Allah, may He be exalted, says: ‘And pilgrimage to the House is a duty to Allah for mankind, for him who can find a way to it’ (Qur’an 3:97). I was not able, and I reflected that your right is more obligatory, so I returned.” Then he wanted to go on a military campaign, so I equipped him. When he was absent from me, I sold all that I owned in al-Baṣrah of real estate and other things, and left it for fear that he might return. [Al-Dāraquṭnī said: Abū al-ʿAynāʾ is not strong in hadith]. And from Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā al-Ṣūlī, who said: I entered upon Abū al-ʿAynāʾ at the end of his life, and he had lost his sight. He heard the scratching of my pen on the notebook and said: “Who is this?” I said: “Your servant and the son of your servant, Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā al-Ṣūlī!” He said: “Rather, my son and the son of my brother.” He said: “What are you writing?” I said: “May Allah make me your ransom, I am writing something on grammar and morphology.” He said: “Grammar in speech is like salt in food; if you add too much of it, the pot becomes bitter. O my son, if you wish to be a leading figure in gatherings, then master jurisprudence and the meanings of the Qur’an. If you wish to be a boon companion of caliphs and people of chivalry and litterateurs, then master choice poems and witty reports.” The compiler said: Abū al-ʿAynāʾ stayed in Baghdad for a long time, then he set out wanting al-Baṣrah.
