✧ Mention of several events In the year two hundred and eighty-two, in Rabīʿ al-Awwal, Takītmur b. Ṭāshtimur was arrested, fettered, and his property seized; (he had been governor of) al-Mawṣil. After him, al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī al-Khurāsānī, known as Kūra, was appointed over it. In it, al-Muʿtaḍid marched to al-Jabal and reached al-Karaj. He seized wealth belonging to Ibn Abī Dulaf and wrote to ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz demanding from him a jewel that was in his possession, so he sent it to him and withdrew from his path. In it, Luʾluʾ, the slave of Ibn Ṭūlūn, was released and mounted on riding animals and mules. In it, Yūsuf b. Abī al-Sāj sent al-Qalānisī, the slave of al-Muwaffaq, as reinforcements to al-Ṣaymara. Yūsuf fled, along with those who obeyed him, to his brother Muḥammad at Marāgha, and he encountered wealth belonging to al-Muʿtaḍid and took it. Concerning that, ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir said: O Imām of guidance, your supporters, the family of Ṭāhir, without cause you conceal while time slips away; and they have mingled gratitude with patience and stood firm, While others give, bestow, and flee. In it, al-Muʿtaḍid sent his vizier ʿUbayd Allāh b. Sulaymān to his son at al-Rayy, and he returned from there. In it, Muḥammad b. Zayd al-ʿAlawī sent from Ṭabaristān to Muḥammad b. Ward al-ʿAṭṭār thirty-two thousand dinars to distribute among his family in Baghdādh, al-Kūfa, and al-Madīna. Al-Muʿtaḍid was informed against him, so Muḥammad was brought before Badr and questioned about that. He acknowledged that a similar amount was sent to him every year, and he distributed it. Badr reported that to al-Muʿtaḍid, and al-Muʿtaḍid said to him: "Do you remember the dream I told you about?" He said: "No, O Commander of the Faithful." He said: "I saw in sleep as if I wanted the area of al-Nahrawān, and I was with my army, when I passed by a man standing on a hill praying and not turning to me. I was astonished. When he finished his prayer, he said to me: 'Come forward.' I went to him, and he said to me: 'Do you know me?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'I am ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib. Take this and strike the ground with it'—a shovel was before him—so I took it and struck with it several times. He said to me: 'Indeed, from your descendants this affair will be assumed by a number equal to the strikes, so enjoin them to treat my descendants well.'" He ordered Badr to release the money and the man, and ordered him to write to his correspondent in Ṭabaristān to send what he wished openly and to distribute what came to him openly, and he instructed that he be assisted in that. (In it, Abū Ṭalḥa Manṣūr b. Muslim died in al-Muʿtaḍid's prison.) (In it, a concubine named Shaghab bore al-Muʿtaḍid a son whom he named Jaʿfar, and he is al-Muqtadir.) In it, Khumārawayh b. Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn was killed: one of his servants slaughtered him on his bed in Dhū al-Ḥijja in Damascus, and more than twenty of his servants who were suspected were killed. The cause of his killing was that someone informed him, saying that the slave girls of his palace had each taken a eunuch from his palace as a husband. He said: "If you wish to know the truth of that, bring some of the slave girls, beat her, and interrogate her until you learn the truth of that." He immediately sent to his deputy in Egypt ordering him to bring several slave girls so that he might learn the situation from them. A group of the servants gathered and agreed among themselves to kill him, fearing the exposure of what was said to him, for they were his inner circle. They slaughtered him at night and fled. When he was killed, the commanders gathered and seated his son Jaysh b. Khumārawayh in the emirate, who was with him in Damascus and was his eldest son. They pledged allegiance to him, and wealth was distributed among them; he was a young, inexperienced boy. Then they killed him and plundered his palace. Then they appointed Hārūn b. Khumārawayh, who undertook to pay every year one million five hundred thousand dinars to be delivered to the caliph's court, and al-Muʿtaḍid confirmed him in that. When al-Muktafī came to power, he dismissed him and appointed in his place Muḥammad b. Sulaymān al-Wāthiqī, who seized the wealth of the family of Ṭūlūn, and that was the end of their era. On the fifth of Rabīʿ al-Awwal of that year, on Tuesday, al-Muʿtaḍid consummated his marriage with his wife, the daughter of Khumārawayh. Her arrival in Baghdad had been in the company of her paternal uncle and Ibn al-Jaṣṣāṣ, while the caliph was absent in al-Mawṣil. Then she was conveyed to al-Muʿtaḍid on the fourth of Rabīʿ al-Awwal. It was proclaimed in both parts of Baghdad that no one should cross the Tigris on Sunday, and the gates of the lanes adjoining the shore were closed. Sails were stretched over the streets leading to the Tigris, and men were stationed on both banks of the Tigris to prevent people from appearing from their houses on the shore. When the night prayer was performed, a boat came from al-Muʿtaḍid's palace with servants carrying candles and stopped opposite the palace of Ṣāʿid. Four fire-barges had been prepared and moored at Ṣāʿid's palace. When the boat arrived, the fire-barges were launched and the boat proceeded among them. The lady remained on Monday in al-Muʿtaḍid's palace and was presented to him on Tuesday, the fifth of Rabīʿ al-Awwal. The aforementioned person led the people in the pilgrimage this year.
