قَصْدِ الْمُعْتَضِدِ بَنِي شَيْبَانَ، وَصُلْحِهِ مَعَهُمْ وَفِي سنة ثمانين ومائتين، فِي أَوَّلِ صَفَرٍ سَارَ الْمُعْتَضِدُ مِنْ بَغْدَاذَ يُرِيدُ بَنِي شَيْبَانَ بِالْمَوْضِعِ الَّذِي يَجْتَمِعُونَ بِهِ مِنْ أَرْضِ الْجَزِيرَةِ، فَلَمَّا بَلَغَهُمْ قَصْدُهُ جَمَعُوا إِلَيْهِمْ أَمْوَالَهُمْ، وَأَغَارَ الْمُعْتَضِدُ عَلَى أَعْرَابٍ عِنْدَ السِّنِّ، فَنَهَبَ أَمْوَالَهُمْ، وَقَتَلَ مِنْهُمْ مَقْتَلَةً عَظِيمَةً، وَغَرِقَ مِنْهُمْ فِي الزَّابِّ مِثْلُ ذَلِكَ، وَعَجَزَ النَّاسُ عَنْ حَمْلِ مَا غَنِمُوهُ، فَبِيعَتِ الشَّاةُ بِدِرْهَمٍ، وَالْبَعِيرُ بِخَمْسَةِ دَرَاهِمَ. وَسَارَ إِلَى الْمَوْصِلِ وَبَلَدَ، فَلَقِيَهُ بَنُو شَيْبَانَ يَسْأَلُونَهُ الْعَفْوَ، وَبَذَلُوا لَهُ رَهَائِنَ، فَأَجَابَهُمْ إِلَى مَا طَلَبُوا، وَعَادَ إِلَى بَغْدَاذَ. وَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عِيسَى بْنِ الشَّيْخِ يَطْلُبُ مِنْهُ مَا أَخَذَهُ مِنْ أَمْوَالِ ابْنِ كُنْدَاجِيقَ بِآمِدَ، فَبَعَثَهُ إِلَيْهِ وَمَعَهُ هَدَايَا كَثِيرَةٌ. وَكَانَ مَعَ الْمُعْتَضِدِ حَادٍ جَيِّدُ الْحُدَاءِ فَقَالَ فِي تِلْكَ اللَّيَالِي يَحْدُو لِلْمُعْتَضِدِ: وقد أَشْرَفَ عَلَى جَبَلٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ: نُوبَاذَ، فَأَنْشَدَ الْأَعْرَابِيُّ فَأَجْهَشْتُ لَلتَّوْبَاذِ حِينَ رَأَيْتُهُ وَهَلَّلْتُ لِلّرَّحْمَنِ حِينَ رَآنِي وَقُلْتُ لَهُ أَيْنَ الَّذِينَ عَهِدْتَهُمْ بِظِلِّكَ فِي أَمْنٍ وَلِينِ زَمَانِي فَقَالَ مَضَوْا وَاسْتَخْلَفُونِي مَكَانَهُمْ وَمَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يَبْقَى عَلَى الْحَدَثَانِ قَالَ: فَتَغَرْغَرَتْ عَيْنَا الْمُعْتَضِدِ، وَقَالَ: مَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يَبْقَى عَلَى الْحَدَثَانِ. وَاصْطَفَى الْمُعْتَضِدُ مِنَ الْأَعْرَابِ عَجُوزًا فَصِيحَةً، فَجَاءَتْ يَوْمًا فَجَلَسَتْ فَقَالَ لَهَا الْحَاجِبُ: قُومِي إِلَى أَنْ نَأْمُرَكَ تَجْلِسِينَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ! فَقَالَتْ: أَنْتَ لَمْ تُعَرِّفْنِي مَا أَعْمَلُ؟ ثُمَّ قَامَتْ فَتَغَافَلَ عَنْهَا الْمُعْتَضِدُ، فَقَالَتْ: أَقِيَامٌ إِلَى الْأَبَدِ فَمَتَى يَنْقَضِي الْأَمَدُ ! فَضَحِكَ، وَأَمَرَهَا بِالْجُلُوسِ.
Translation
✧ Al-Muʿtaḍid's campaign against Banū Shaybān and his peace agreement with them In the year two hundred and eighty, at the beginning of Ṣafar, al-Muʿtaḍid marched from Baghdādh intending to attack Banū Shaybān at the place where they gather in the land of al-Jazīrah. When his approach reached them, they gathered their wealth together. Al-Muʿtaḍid raided some Bedouin near al-Sinn, plundering their property and killing a great number of them, and a like number of them drowned in the Zābb. The people were unable to carry what they had taken as booty, so a sheep was sold for a dirham and a camel for five dirhams. He then proceeded to al-Mawṣil and Balad. Banū Shaybān met him, asking for pardon and offering him hostages. He granted them what they sought and returned to Baghdādh. He sent to Aḥmad b. ʿĪsā b. al-Shaykh, demanding from him the property he had taken belonging to Ibn Kundājīq at Āmid. He sent it to him, along with many gifts. Al-Muʿtaḍid had with him a camel-driver skilled in driving songs, and on one of those nights he sang for al-Muʿtaḍid: When he looked down upon a mountain called Nūbādh, the Bedouin recited: I burst into tears at al-Tawbādh when I saw it, and praised the Merciful when He saw me. And I said to it: Where are those whom you knew in your shade, in security and the gentleness of my time? It said: They have passed away and left me in their place; and who is it that remains against the vicissitudes of time? He said: Al-Muʿtaḍid's eyes filled with tears, and he said: "Who is it that remains against the vicissitudes of time?" Al-Muʿtaḍid selected from among the Bedouin an eloquent old woman. One day she came and sat down, and the chamberlain said to her: "Rise until we command you to sit before the Commander of the Faithful!" She said: "Have you not informed me of what I should do?" Then she rose, and al-Muʿtaḍid pretended not to notice her. She said: "Standing forever? Then when will the time end?" He laughed and ordered her to sit.
