✧ The imprisonment of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Muhtadī In the year two hundred and eighty, al-Muʿtaḍid seized ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Muhtadī and Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn, known as Shaylama. This Shaylama had been with the leader of the Zanj until the end of his days, then he joined al-Muwaffaq under a guarantee of safety, and al-Muwaffaq granted him safety. The reason for his seizure was that one of those who had been granted safety denounced him to al-Muʿtaḍid, saying that he was summoning people to a man whose name was unknown, and that he had corrupted a group of the soldiers and others. So al-Muʿtaḍid seized him and questioned him, but he confessed to nothing and said: "If the man were under my foot, I would not lift them from him!" So he ordered that he be tied to a pole of tent wood, then a great fire was lit, and he was turned over the fire until his skin split. Then his neck was struck and he was crucified at the bridge. He imprisoned ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Muhtadī until he learned of his innocence, then he released him. Al-Muʿtaḍid had said to Shaylama: "It has reached me that you are summoning people to Ibn al-Muhtadī?" He replied: "What is well-known about me is that I am loyal to the family of Abū Ṭālib."
