Narrated from him: Ibn Ṣāʿid, Ibn Makhlad, Abū al-Ḥusayn b. al-Munādī, al-Najjād, and Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī. He was a devoted worshipper, ascetic, trustworthy, truthful, precise, and accurate. A great many people benefited from him, and most people transmitted from him because of his trustworthiness and righteousness. He reached ninety years minus a few months. He died in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year and was buried in the cemeteries of the Kūfah Gate [in Baghdad]. Khāqān, Abū Bakr ʿAbd Allāh al-Ṣūfī Khāqān, Abū Bakr ʿAbd Allāh al-Ṣūfī. And from [Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. ʿAlī] b. Thābit, who said: Abū Nuʿaym al-Ḥāfiẓ mentioned to me that he was one of the major Baghdadi Sufis. He said to me: I heard my father say: I heard Jaʿfar al-Ḥadhdhāʾ al-Shīrāzī — and he mentioned Khāqān — and he said: He was a possessor of charismatic gifts. He mentioned that Ibn Faḍlān al-Rāzī said: My father was one of the merchants in Baghdad, and I was sitting on the bench of his shop. A man passed by whom I thought was one of the Baghdadi poor, and I had not yet reached puberty at that time. He drew my heart, so I stood up and greeted him, and I had a dinar with me. I gave it to him, and he took it and went on without turning to me. I said to myself: You have wasted the dinar. So I followed him until he came to the Shūnīzīyah mosque. He saw three of the poor in it and gave the dinar to one of them. Then he faced the qiblah and prayed. The one who took the dinar went out, and I followed behind him watching him. He bought food, and the three ate it while the shaykh remained engaged in his prayer. When they finished, the shaykh turned to them and said: Do you know what kept me from you? They said: No, O master. He said: A young man handed me the dinar, and I was asking God Almighty to free him from the slavery of this world, and He has done so. I could not contain myself, and I sat down before him and said: You have spoken the truth, O master. That shaykh was Khāqān. 1864 - ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Azhar b. Khālid, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Aʿwar. Of Herat origin. He transmitted from Abū Nuʿaym al-Faḍl b. Dukayn. Narrated from him: Ibn Makhlad and Ismāʿīl al-Ṣaffār. He was trustworthy. He died in this year. Muḥammad b. Azhar, Abū Jaʿfar al-Kātib Muḥammad b. Azhar, Abū Jaʿfar al-Kātib. He heard Abū Nuʿaym, Abū al-Walīd al-Ṭayālisī, Musaddad, al-Shādhakūnī, and others. Narrated from him: Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī and others. He died in Jumādā al-Ūlā of this year, having reached eighty. He was well received by the people. Muḥammad b. Isrāʾīl b. Yaʿqūb, Abū Bakr al-Jawharī Muḥammad b. Isrāʾīl b. Yaʿqūb, Abū Bakr al-Jawharī. He heard Muḥammad b. Sābiq, Muʿāwiyah b. ʿAmr, ʿAmr b. Ḥakkām, and others. Narrated from him: al-Qāḍī al-Maḥāmilī, Aḥmad b. Kāmil, Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī, and others. He was trustworthy. He died in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year [and it is said: in the year two hundred and eighty]. And among the notable persons who died in it: Al-Balādhurī, the historian al-Balādhurī, the historian. One of the famous ones, Aḥmad b. Yaḥyā b. Jābir b. Dāwūd, Abū al-Ḥasan — and it is said Abū Jaʿfar, and it is said Abū Bakr — al-Baghdādī al-Balādhurī, author of the history attributed to him. He heard Hishām b. al-Qāsim b. Sallām, Abū al-Rabīʿ al-Zahrānī, and a group. From him: Yaḥyā b. al-Nadīm, Aḥmad b. ʿAmmār, and Abū Yūsuf Yaʿqūb b. Nuʿaym b. Qarqārah al-Azdī. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir said: He was a man of letters and a transmitter, with excellent books. He praised al-Maʾmūn with panegyrics and kept company with al-Mutawakkil. He died in the days of al-Muʿtamid, and he suffered from obsessive delusion at the end of his life. Ibn ʿAsākir narrated from al-Balādhurī, who said: Maḥmūd al-Warrāq said to me: Compose poetry whose remembrance remains for you and whose sin departs from you. So I said: Prepare yourself, O soul, for death, and strive for deliverance, for the resolute one is prepared. You have come to know that there is no immortality for the living, and from death there is no escape. You are but a borrower of what you will return, and borrowed things are returned. You are heedless while calamities are not heedless, and you amuse yourself while destinies hasten. What dominion on earth, or what fortune, belongs to a man whose portion of the earth is a grave? Do not hope for permanence in the abode of death and a dwelling whose fatal arrows are appointed for you. How can a man love the pleasure of days in which his breaths are counted? Al-Tirmidhī al-Tirmidhī. His name is Muḥammad b. ʿĪsā b. Sawrah b. Mūsā b. al-Ḍaḥḥāk. And it is said: Muḥammad b. ʿĪsā b. Yazīd b. Sawrah b. al-Sakan. And it is said: Muḥammad b. ʿĪsā b. Sawrah b. Shaddād, Abū ʿĪsā al-Sulamī al-Tirmidhī, the blind. And it is said that he was born blind. He is one of the imams of this discipline in his time, and he has the famous compilations, among them the Jāmiʿ, the Shamāʾil, the Asmāʾ al-Ṣaḥābah, and others. The book al-Jāmiʿ is one of the six books to which scholars refer in all regions. And the ignorance of Ibn Ḥazm regarding Abū ʿĪsā, when he said in his Muḥallā: 'And who is Muḥammad b. ʿĪsā b. Sawrah?' — does not harm him in his religion or his worldly life, nor does it lower his standing among the people of knowledge; rather, it lowers the standing of Ibn Ḥazm among the ḥuffāẓ. And how can anything be sound in minds when the day itself needs a proof? We have mentioned his shaykhs in our book al-Takmīl. More than one scholar narrated from him, among them Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl al-Bukhārī in other than the Ṣaḥīḥ, al-Haytham b. Kulayb al-Shāshī, author of the Musnad, Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Maḥbūb al-Maḥbūbī, the transmitter of the Jāmiʿ from him, and Muḥammad b. al-Mundhir Shukr. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Yaʿlā al-Khalīl b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Khalīlī al-Qazwīnī said in his book ʿUlūm al-Ḥadīth: Muḥammad b. ʿĪsā b. Sawrah b. Shaddād al-Ḥāfiẓ, agreed upon. He has a book on the sunan and discourse on disparagement and commendation. Ibn Maḥbūb and the eminent ones narrated from him, and he is famous for trustworthiness and knowledge. He died after the two hundred and eighties. Thus he said regarding the date of his death. And al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Sulaymān al-Ghunjār said in Tārīkh Bukhārā: Muḥammad b. ʿĪsā b. Sawrah b. Mūsā b. al-Ḍaḥḥāk al-Sulamī al-Tirmidhī al-Ḥāfiẓ entered Bukhārā and transmitted there. He is the author of al-Jāmiʿ and al-Tārīkh. He died in al-Tirmidh on Monday night, thirteen nights having passed of Rajab, in the year two hundred and seventy-nine. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Ḥātim b. Ḥibbān mentioned him among the trustworthy and said: He was one of those who collected, compiled, memorized, and engaged in scholarly discussion. Al-Tirmidhī said: Al-Bukhārī wrote from me the ḥadīth of ʿAṭīyah from Abū Saʿīd that the Messenger of God ﷺ said to ʿAlī: It is not lawful for anyone to become junub in this mosque except me and you. Ibn Nuqṭah narrated in his Taqyīd from al-Tirmidhī that he said: I compiled this sound musnad, and I presented it to the scholars of the Ḥijāz, and they were pleased with it; and I presented it to the scholars of Iraq, and they were pleased with it; and I presented it to the scholars of Khurāsān, and they were pleased with it. And whoever has this book in his house, it is as though there is a prophet in his house speaking. They said: The total of al-Jāmiʿ is one hundred and fifty-one books. And the book al-ʿIlal he compiled in Samarqand, and he finished it on the day of the Feast of the Sacrifice in the year two hundred and seventy. Ibn Nuqṭah said: I heard Muḥammad b. Ṭāhir al-Maqdisī say: I heard Abū Ismāʿīl ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad al-Anṣārī say: The book of al-Tirmidhī is, in my view, more beneficial than the book of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. I said: And why? He said: Because no one can reach the benefit of those two except someone of complete knowledge, whereas this is a book whose ḥadīths he has explained and clarified, so everyone among the people can reach them, whether jurists, ḥadīth scholars, or others. I say: What appears from his circumstances is that blindness only befell him after he had traveled, heard, written, engaged in scholarly discussion, debated, and compiled. Then his death occurred in his own town in Rajab of this year, according to the sound and well-known opinion, and God knows best.
