the accounts of past peoples from the Israelites and others

Translation

✧ Then He said: “And they remained in their cave three hundred years and increased by nine” (Q 18:25) – since in informing of the length of their stay there is a great benefit, the Most High mentioned it. These nine added are by lunar years, and they are to complete three hundred solar years, for every hundred lunar years falls short of solar years by three years. Say: “Allah knows best how long they remained” (Q 18:26) – that is, if you are asked about the like of this while you have no transmitted report concerning it, then refer the matter in that to Allah, Mighty and Majestic. “To Him belongs the unseen of the heavens and the earth” (Q 18:26) – that is, He is the Knower of the unseen, and He discloses it to none except whom He wills of His creation. “How seeing is He and how hearing!” (Q 18:26) – meaning that He puts things in their proper places due to His complete knowledge of His creation and of what they deserve. Then He said: “They have no protector besides Him, nor does He share in His judgment with anyone” (Q 18:26) – that is, rather, He is alone in sovereignty, disposing therein alone, with no partner.
