the accounts of past peoples from the Israelites and others
Translation
✧ They differed concerning their affair. Some said: 'Build over them a building,' meaning: 'Seal the door of the cave over them' so that they would not come out, or so that nothing harmful would reach them. Others—those who prevailed in their affair—said: 'We shall surely take over them a mosque,' meaning a place of worship that would be blessed due to its proximity to these righteous ones. This was common among those before us; but in our Sacred Law, it is established in the two Ṣaḥīḥs on the authority of the Messenger of God ﷺ that he said: 'God cursed the Jews and the Christians; they took the graves of their prophets as mosques,' warning against what they did. As for His saying, may He be exalted: 'And thus We made them stumbled upon, that they might know that the promise of God is true and that the Hour—there is no doubt about it,' the meaning of 'We made them stumbled upon' is 'We caused the people to discover their affair.' Many of the commentators said: 'So that the people might know that the resurrection is true and that the Hour—there is no doubt about it—when they learn that these people slept for more than three hundred years and then arose as they were, without any change in them. For He who preserved them as they were is able to restore the bodies even if worms have consumed them, and to revive the dead even if their bodies and bones have become dust. This is something about which the believers have no doubt: "Our only word to a thing when We intend it is that We say to it, 'Be,' and it is" [al-Naḥl: 40].' It is possible that the pronoun in 'that they might know' refers back to the Companions of the Cave, since their knowledge of that from themselves is more profound than others' knowledge of them. It is possible that it refers to all. And God knows best.
