Translation

✧ The Story of the Companions of the Cave Allah, Exalted is He, said: Or have you thought that the Companions of the Cave and the Raqīm were among Our signs a wonder? When the youths took refuge in the cave, they said, “Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy, and prepare for us from our affair right guidance. So We struck upon their ears in the cave for years, a number. Then We raised them up that We might know which of the two parties was more precise in calculating how long they had remained. We relate to you their tidings in truth. Indeed, they were youths who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance. And We bound up their hearts when they stood up and said, “Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. We will never call upon any god besides Him; then we would have spoken an outrage. These, our people, have taken gods besides Him. Why do they not bring for them a clear authority? And who is more unjust than one who fabricates against Allah a lie? And when you have withdrawn from them and what they worship except Allah, then take refuge in the cave. Your Lord will spread for you of His mercy and will prepare for you from your affair a facility. And you see the sun, when it rises, inclining away from their cave to the right, and when it sets, passing them by to the left, while they are in an open space within it. That is of the signs of Allah. Whomever Allah guides, he is the rightly guided; and whomever He leads astray, you will never find for him a protecting friend to guide. And you would think them awake, while they were asleep. And We turned them to the right and to the left, while their dog stretched its forelegs at the threshold. Had you looked upon them, you would have turned from them in flight and been filled with terror of them. And thus We raised them up that they might question one another. A speaker among them said, “How long have you remained?” They said, “We have remained a day or part of a day.” They said, “Your Lord knows best how long you have remained. So send one of you with this silver coin of yours to the city, and let him see which is the purest food and bring you provision from it. And let him be courteous and let no one become aware of you. Indeed, if they come to know of you, they will stone you or return you to their religion, and then you will never succeed, ever.” And thus We caused them to be discovered, that they might know that the promise of Allah is true and that the Hour has no doubt about it. When they disputed among themselves their affair, they said, “Build over them a structure; their Lord knows best about them.” Those who prevailed in their affair said, “We will certainly take over them a mosque.” They will say, “Three, the fourth of them their dog,” and they say, “Five, the sixth of them their dog,” guessing at the unseen, and they say, “Seven, and the eighth of them their dog.” Say, “My Lord knows best their number; none knows them except a few. So do not dispute about them except in outward dispute, and do not ask any of them about them.” And never say of anything, “I will do that tomorrow,” except [if] Allah wills. And remember your Lord when you forget, and say, “Perhaps my Lord will guide me to something closer than this in right guidance.” And they remained in their cave three hundred years, and they added nine. Say, “Allah knows best how long they remained; to Him belongs the unseen of the heavens and the earth. How seeing is He and how hearing! They have besides Him no protector, and He shares His rule with no one.” [Al-Kahf: 9–26].
