She died shortly before his caliphate. He was born in Surra man raʾā in the year 243 AH. It is also said: 242 AH. He was brown-skinned, slender-bodied, of moderate build, with gray hair appearing. In the front of his beard there was length, and in the front of his head there was a white mole. The inscription on his signet ring was: "Its praiser is Aḥmad; he believes in God, the One." He had as children: ʿAlī al-Muktafī, Muḥammad al-Qāhir, and Jaʿfar al-Muqtadir. Al-Muʿtaḍid was given the oath of allegiance on the morning of the night in which al-Muʿtamid died. The oath of allegiance was given to Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Muʿtaḍid billāh Aḥmad b. al-Muwaffaq Abī Ṭalḥa b. al-Mutawakkil for the caliphate. He was among the best of the Abbasid caliphs and their men. The affairs of the caliphate had been effaced, but God revived them through his resolve, justice, gallantry, firmness, and courage. Ibn al-Muʿtazz said: O Commander of the Faithful, the hoped-for one, God has gladdened eyes through you, when we were summoned to pledge allegiance to you as a rightful oath, so we hastened toward it, with souls that had long hoped for you; our hands preceded, obedient. You have settled the core of every soul and spread security for the fearful. He appointed his servant Badr as head of the shurṭa, ʿUbayd Allāh b. Sulaymān as wazīr, and Muḥammad b. al-Shāh b. Mālik as head of the ḥaras. In Shawwāl, the envoy of ʿAmr b. al-Layth reached him, bringing many gifts, and asked that he appoint him over Khurasan. He concluded the appointment for him, and sent him robes of honor, the standard, and the covenant. He raised the standard in his house for three days. He appointed Ṣāliḥ as ḥājib. Then al-Qāsim b. ʿUbayd Allāh became his wazīr, and his judges were Ismāʿīl b. Isḥāq, Yūsuf b. Yaʿqūb, and Ibn Abī al-Shawārib.
