We passed by a fortress, and the army turned aside from it, but he dismounted near the fortress. We thought he was going to urinate, but he looked at a Christian woman looking out from behind the fortress, and he fell in love with her. He said to her in Greek: How can I get to you? She said: When you become Christian, the gate will be opened for you, and I am yours. He said: So he did so, and he was admitted to the fortress. He said: We completed our expedition in the severest grief, as if each man of us regarded that as happening to his own son from his loins. Then we returned in another raiding party, and we passed by him looking out from atop the fortress with the Christians. We said: O so-and-so, what has become of your recitation? What has become of your knowledge? What has become of your prayers and fasting? He said: Know that I have forgotten the entire Qurʾān; I remember nothing of it except this verse: Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims. Leave them to eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by hope, for they will come to know. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. al-Walīd b. Muḥammad b. [Burd b. Yazīd b.] Sakht, Abū al-Walīd al-Anṭākī. Muḥammad b.
