Translation

✧ In the year two hundred and seventy-six, the shurṭah of Baghdād was assigned to ʿUmar b. al-Layth, and his name was written on the banners, the shields, and other things. This was in Shawwāl. Then ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir was placed in charge of the shurṭah on behalf of ʿAmr, who then ordered him to remove ʿAmr's name from the banners and other things in Shawwāl of this year. In this year, in the middle of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, al-Muwaffaq set out for the lands of al-Jabal. The reason for his departure was that al-Mādharāʾī, the secretary of Adhkūtakīn, informed him that he had great wealth there, and that if he went with him he would take all of it. So he went to him, but he did not find the wealth. When he found nothing, he went to al-Karaj, then to Iṣbahān seeking Aḥmad b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Abī Dulaf. Aḥmad withdrew from the town with his army and his family, and left his house with its furnishings for al-Muwaffaq to stay in when he arrived. In this year, al-Muwaffaq billāh appointed Ibn Abī al-Sāj over Adharbayjān, and he went there. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan al-Hamdānī, the lord of Marāghah, came out against him to turn him away from it, so he fought him. ʿAbd Allāh was defeated and besieged, and it was taken from him in the year two hundred and eighty, as we shall mention. Ibn Abī al-Sāj became established in his office. In this year, Muḥammad b. Ḥammād b. Isḥāq b. Ḥammād b. Yazīd al-Qāḍī died. In this year, the governor of al-Mawṣil for Ibn Kundāj killed a man of the Khawārij named Nuʿaym. Hārūn, the leader of the Khawārij, heard of that while he was at Ḥadīthat al-Mawṣil, so he gathered his companions and marched to al-Mawṣil intending to fight its people. He camped east of the Tigris. Their notables and leaders sent to him asking what had brought him. He mentioned the killing of Nuʿaym. They said: "The sultan's governor killed him, not by our choice," and they sought a guarantee of safety from him so that they might come to him to apologize and disavow his killing. He granted them safety, and a group of the people of al-Mawṣil and their notables came out to him and disavowed the killing, so he departed from them. In this year, Abū Qilābah ʿAbd al-Malik b. Muḥammad al-Raqqāshī al-Baṣrī died. He used to live in Baghdād. In this year, news arrived of the collapse of a mound on the Nahr al-Ṣillah known as Tall [Banī] Shaqīq, revealing seven graves containing seven intact bodies. The graves were like a basin of stone, the color of a whetstone, with writing on them that no one could understand, and over them were new shrouds. The scent of musk emanated from them. One of them was a young man with long hair, and on his lips there was moisture as if he had drunk water, and as if he had been adorned with kohl, and he had a wound in his side. In this year, the people performed the pilgrimage led by Hārūn b. Muḥammad al-ʿAbbāsī, the governor of the two sanctuaries and al-Ṭāʾif. When the pilgrims from Yemen returned, they halted at one of the stopping places. A flood came upon them without their noticing until it drowned them all, and not one of them escaped. Verily we belong to God and to Him we return.
