Translation
✧ Those who died in the year two hundred seventy-five among the notables: Abu Bakr Ahmad b. Muhammad al-Hajjaj al-Marwadhi. And among the prominent persons who died in it: Abu Bakr Ahmad b. Muhammad al-Hajjaj al-Marwadhi, the companion of Imam Ahmad. He was one of the intelligent imams. Ahmad used to prefer him over all his companions, feel at ease with him, and send him on errands, saying: "Say whatever you wish." He is the one who closed the eyes of Imam Ahmad, and he was also among those who washed him. He transmitted many issues from Ahmad and attained great eminence. And from al-Khallal, he said: Abu Bakr al-Marwazi went out to the enemy, and the people escorted him to Samarra. He kept sending them back, but they would not return. They were estimated, and behold, there were in Samarra, apart from those who returned, about fifty thousand people. It was said: "O Abu Bakr! Praise God, for this is knowledge that has been spread for you." He wept, then said: "This knowledge is not mine; [rather] it is the knowledge of Ahmad b. Hanbal." Abu Bakr died on the sixth of Jumada al-Ula of this year [and was buried near the grave of Ahmad b. Hanbal]. Ahmad b. Hanbal was seen in a dream riding, and it was said to him: "Where are you going?" He said: "To the Tree of Tuba; we are catching up with Abu Bakr al-Marwazi." Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Ghalib b. Khalid b. Mirdas, Abu 'Abd Allah al-Bahili. Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Ghalib b. Khalid b. Mirdas, Abu 'Abd Allah al-Bahili al-Basri, known as Ghulam Khalil, settled in Baghdad and narrated from Sulayman b. Dawud al-Shadhakuni, Shayban b. Farrukh, Qurra b. Habib, and others. From him narrated Ibn al-Sammak, Ibn Makhlad, and others. Abu Hatim and others disapproved of him for hadiths he narrated as objectionable from unknown shaykhs. Abu Hatim said: "He was not one to fabricate hadith; he was a righteous man." And from al-Hasan b. 'Ali al-Tamimi, he said: I read to Muhammad b. al-Husayn al-Qattan, from Abu Bakr Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Ziyad al-Muqri, he said: Abu Ja'far b. al-Sha'iri said: When Ghulam Khalil narrated from Bakr b. 'Isa, from Abu 'Awana [from Abu Malik al-Ashja'i, from his father], I said: "O Abu 'Abd Allah, this man was narrated from by Ibrahim b. 'Ar'ara and Ahmad b. Hanbal, and he died long ago; neither you nor anyone of your age met him." So he thought about this. He said: Then I feared him, so I said: "I reckon you heard from a man called Bakr b. 'Isa other than this Bakr b. 'Isa." He fell silent, and we parted. When it was the next day, he said: "O Abu Ja'far, did you know that last night I examined those from whom I heard in Basra who were called Bakr b. 'Isa, and I found sixty men." And from 'Ubayd Allah b. 'Adi al-Hafiz, he said: I heard Abu 'Abd Allah al-Nahawandi say in the assembly of Abu 'Aruba: I said to Ghulam Khalil: "These heart-softening hadiths that you narrate." He said: "We fabricated them to soften the hearts of the common people." Abu Dawud al-Sijistani used to declare Ghulam Khalil a liar, saying: "I fear he may be the Dajjal of Baghdad. His hadith was presented to me, and I examined four hundred hadiths whose chains and texts are all lies." Al-Daraqutni said: "Ghulam Khalil is abandoned." And from Ahmad b. Kamil al-Qadi, he said: In the year two hundred seventy-five, [Abu 'Abd Allah Ahmad b. Muhammad] Ghulam Khalil died in Rajab. He was carried in a coffin to Basra, the markets of the City of Peace were closed, and women and children went out to pray over him. He was buried in Basra, and a dome was built over him. He was eloquent, memorized much knowledge, and lived on dry fava beans alone. And from Abu al-Husayn b. al-Munadi: Ghulam Khalil died in Rajab. Prayer was performed over him in the house where he used to reside, and he was carried in a coffin and taken down to Basra. Most of those who prayed over him only prayed on the bank of the Tigris. People descended, riding and on foot, and in boats, to Kalwadha and below it, and he was buried in Basra. Ahmad b. Mula'ib. And Ahmad b. Mula'ib narrated from Yahya b. Ma'in and others. He was trustworthy, devout, learned, and virtuous, and much knowledge of hadith spread through him. And 'Abd Allah b. Ya'qub b. Ishaq al-Tamimi al-'Attar al-Mawsili. Ibn al-Athir said: He had many hadiths and was considered upright by the authorities. And Yahya b. Abi Talib. Abu Dawud al-Sijistani. And Abu Dawud al-Sijistani: The author of "al-Sunan," he is Sulayman b. al-Ash'ath b. Ishaq b. Bashir b. Shaddad b. 'Amr b. 'Imran, Abu Dawud al-Azdi al-Sijistani, one of the imams of hadith, a tireless traveler across horizons and regions. He collected, compiled, extracted, and authored, and listened extensively from the shaykhs of the lands in Syria, Egypt, the Jazira, Iraq, Khurasan, and elsewhere. He is the author of the famous "al-Sunan," widely circulated among scholars, about which Abu Hamid al-Ghazali said: "Knowledge of it suffices the mujtahid among the prophetic hadiths." A group narrated from him, including his son Abu Bakr 'Abd Allah, Abu 'Abd al-Rahman al-Nasa'i, and Ahmad b. Salman al-Najjad, who was the last to narrate from him in the world. Abu Dawud resided in Basra and came to Baghdad more than once and narrated his book "al-Sunan" there. It is said that he compiled it there and presented it to Imam Ahmad, who deemed it excellent and approved of it. Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi said with his chain: I heard Abu al-Husayn Muhammad b. 'Abd Allah b. al-Hasan al-Fardi say: I heard Abu Bakr b. Dasah say: I heard Abu Dawud say: "I wrote down from the Messenger of God ﷺ five hundred thousand hadiths. From them I selected what I included in this book—meaning the book 'al-Sunan'—in which I gathered four thousand eight hundred hadiths. I mentioned the sound and what resembles and approaches it. For a person's religion, four hadiths suffice from that. One of them is his saying ﷺ: 'Actions are by intentions.' The second is his saying: 'Part of the excellence of a person's Islam is his leaving what does not concern him.' The third is his saying: 'A believer is not a believer until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.' The fourth is his saying: 'The lawful is clear, and the unlawful is clear, and between them are ambiguous matters.'" I was told from 'Abd al-'Aziz b. Ja'far al-Hanbali that Abu Bakr al-Khallal said: "Abu Dawud Sulayman b. al-Ash'ath al-Sijistani was the foremost imam of his time, a man whom no one of his era preceded in knowledge of extracting the sciences and insight into their loci. He was a God-fearing, foremost man. Ahmad b. Hanbal heard one hadith from him, which Abu Dawud used to mention. Ibrahim al-Asbahani and Abu Bakr b. Sadaqa used to elevate his status and mention him as they mentioned no one else of his time like him." I say: The hadith that Imam Ahmad wrote from him and heard from him is what he narrated from the hadith of Hammad b. Salama, from Abu al-'Ushara' al-Darimi, from his father, "that the Messenger of God ﷺ was asked about the 'atira, and he deemed it good." Ibrahim al-Harbi and others said: "Hadith was made pliable for Abu Dawud as iron was made pliable for Dawud." Another said: "He was one of the memorizers of Islam for hadith, its defects, and its chains, in the highest degree of devotion, chastity, righteousness, and piety, among the knights of hadith." Another said: "Ibn Mas'ud used to resemble the Prophet ﷺ in his guidance, conduct, and demeanor. 'Alqama resembled him, Ibrahim resembled 'Alqama, Mansur resembled Ibrahim, Sufyan resembled Mansur, Waki' resembled Sufyan, Ahmad resembled Waki', and Abu Dawud resembled Ahmad b. Hanbal." Muhammad b. Bakr b. 'Abd al-Razzaq said: "Abu Dawud had a wide sleeve and a narrow sleeve. It was said to him: 'What is this, may God have mercy on you?' He said: 'This wide one is for books, and the other is not needed.'" Abu Dawud was born in the year two hundred two, and died in Basra on Friday, fourteen nights remaining of Shawwal, in the year two hundred seventy-five, at the age of seventy-three, and was buried beside the grave of Sufyan al-Thawri.
